Hyaluronidases : the enzymes responsible for degradation
The main degradation mechanism relies on naturally occurring enzymes : hyaluronidases.
Their role is gradually fragmenting hyaluronic acid molecules for bodily elimination. This is physiological. Even naturally occurring skin hyaluronic acid is continually produced and degraded.
After injection, these enzymes slowly begin breaking down the product. Gradual absorption explains why results are never permanent.
Patient metabolism influences result duration
Persistence varies noticeably between patients, particularly because individual metabolism and tissue renewal influence the rate of gradual degradation.
In some people, degradation is faster, reducing longevity. Patients performing intense exercise sometimes experience earlier absorption because of greater metabolic and tissue activity.
Conversely, others retain benefits longer. Persistence is generally greater in facial regions with little movement and limited mechanical stress on the product.
Facial movements accelerate absorption
Tissue mobility plays an important role in hyaluronic acid degradation.
In highly active areas such as lips or around the mouth, product generally absorbs faster. Repeated contractions impose constant mechanical stress on the injected gel.
In less mobile areas, injection results last longer.
The type of hyaluronic acid changes result duration
Not all hyaluronic acids have equal degradation resistance.
More cross-linked products were developed for greater long-term stability. Firmer and more cohesive, they mainly restore facial volume and provide lasting tissue support.
More fluid gels, primarily intended to improve hydration, tend to absorb faster.
Result longevity therefore largely depends on the product and its indication.
