SHOULD I REQUEST SICK LEAVE AFTER HYALURONIC ACID INJECTIONS ?

Last updated : 27 May 2026

Hyaluronic acid injections are now one of the most frequently performed treatments in aesthetic medicine. This gel is recognised for safety, speed of administration and immediately visible results. It appeals through both effectiveness and subtlety : the procedure is minimally invasive, requires no general anaesthesia and can be performed in a few minutes in a medical practice.
In practice, however, many people wonder : should time off be planned after the session ? Can you return to work the same day ? Are there visible side effects ?
Time off work is not necessary after a hyaluronic acid injection.

Hyaluronic acid : immediate return or a need for rest ?

Hyaluronic acid injections do not require medical leave

Hyaluronic acid injections generally require no time off work. Performed in a medical practice, this treatment affects neither concentration nor physical ability. In most cases, usual activities can resume immediately, whether a working day or personal commitments.
Many patients choose to schedule sessions between professional appointments, during lunch breaks or at the end of the day. This flexibility is a major advantage of modern aesthetic medical procedures, providing a natural result without disrupting daily routines.

What do Swiss regulations say ?

In Switzerland, hyaluronic acid injections are recognised as aesthetic medical procedures. They are therefore not associated with sick leave or health insurance coverage. No regulation requires social or professional downtime after treatment.
Performed in a practice, the procedure causes no temporary incapacity. Patients should organise their schedule around personal or professional obligations, considering possible mild swelling or temporary redness after the session.

Some temporary effects to anticipate

Although hyaluronic acid injections cause little pain, they may produce mild local reactions that are entirely normal and temporary. Slight injection-site redness, mild swelling or subtle bruising may appear but usually disappear within twenty-four to forty-eight hours. Some people may also experience temporary tension or heaviness, particularly around cheekbones or chin.
These effects do not interfere with daily life but may cause brief aesthetic inconvenience. For an important professional appointment or event on the same day, scheduling the session the day before or at a quieter time, such as a remote-working day, may be more comfortable.

Profession type and time off after injection

Returning to work after hyaluronic acid injection mainly depends on the type of activity. Office work requires no interruption : most patients resume immediately. Light make-up, if authorised by the physician, can conceal minor redness from the next day.
For jobs involving physical activity or exposure to heat, dust or outdoor conditions, a short precautionary period is preferable. During the first twenty-four hours, excessive sweating, intense heat (professional kitchens, steam rooms, sun exposure) and dusty environments should be avoided to limit inflammation or infection risks.
Finally, in highly public-facing professions — communications, events, media — mild swelling or temporary bruising may cause aesthetic concern. Scheduling the session a few days before a professional or media commitment is preferable for optimal comfort.

When might a rest period be useful ?

A short rest period may be recommended preventively in certain specific situations :

  • If you perform intense physical activity or work in a hot environment (sport, cooking, sauna…).
  • If injections involved areas prone to swelling, such as lips and upper eyelids.
  • If treatment involved a substantial quantity of product, particularly on the body (such as buttocks or hips with HYAcorp).
  • If you easily develop swelling or bruising and your profession involves direct client contact.

In these cases, your physician may recommend 24 to 48 hours of rest without medical leave being necessary.

Practical advice before returning to work

Although hyaluronic acid injections do not require professional interruption, simple measures promote optimal recovery and prevent minor inconveniences that might interfere with office life.

  • Rest the injected area : avoiding manipulation, pressure or rubbing is preferable, particularly in the following hours.
  • Avoid intense physical activity : exercise, sustained exertion or a demanding journey may accentuate inflammation or cause swelling.
  • Avoid heat : overheated environments, prolonged sun exposure or humid settings (such as steam rooms or saunas) may increase swelling.
  • Plan your schedule : if you have an important event or meeting, ideally schedule injection strategically — for example, Thursday evening or Friday, allowing any redness to disappear over the weekend.

These simple habits are not medical obligations but sensible aesthetic care.

In summary : should you stop working after an injection ?

Time off work is generally unnecessary after hyaluronic acid injection. In the vast majority of cases, professional activities can resume immediately without particular discomfort. Depending on your work or the treated area, however, twenty-four to forty-eight hours may be preferable for greater comfort and to allow possible redness or swelling to subside.
The session can always be arranged at a more convenient time — during a remote-working day, a day off or before a weekend — to maintain discretion. If in doubt, the physician will advise on the most appropriate timing, considering your schedule, injected area and skin sensitivity.
