OEDEMA AFTER A HYALURONIC ACID INJECTION : WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Last updated : 21 July 2026

Oedema after a hyaluronic acid injection is temporary swelling of the treated area. It is a common and generally normal reaction in the hours or days following an injection. Its duration depends on the injected area, the type of hyaluronic acid used and the patient's reaction. Significant, painful or unusual swelling nevertheless requires medical advice.

Is it normal to have oedema after a hyaluronic acid injection ?

Yes, mild oedema after a hyaluronic acid injection is an expected and common reaction.
An injection remains a medical procedure that stimulates the tissues. Even when performed with a precise technique, the skin and subcutaneous structures may react temporarily.
Swelling can be linked to several factors :
• The passage of the needle or cannula.
• The natural reaction of the tissues after the injection.
• The presence of the newly injected product.
• Hyaluronic acid's ability to attract water. Hyaluronic acid has a particular property : it retains water molecules. This characteristic contributes to its hydrating and volumising effect, but can also explain initial swelling.

How long does swelling last after a hyaluronic acid injection ?

The duration of oedema varies according to the patient and the treated area.
In general, mild swelling may be present for a few days after the session.
The usual course is gradual :
• The first few hours : the area may appear more swollen than the expected result.
• The first few days : the oedema usually starts to subside.
• After one to two weeks : the result becomes final and the oedema has disappeared.
It is therefore important not to judge the final result immediately after an injection.
Volume that seems excessive initially may simply reflect the combination of the injected product and temporary oedema.

Why do some areas swell more after an injection ?

The severity of oedema after a hyaluronic acid injection varies according to the treated region. Certain facial areas, because of their anatomical characteristics, are more likely to swell in the days following treatment.
The lips are among the most affected regions. Their rich blood supply, delicate tissues and considerable mobility favour transient oedema. The volume observed immediately after injection therefore does not correspond to the final result and gradually decreases as swelling disappears.
The under-eye area deserves particular attention. The skin is especially thin here and some patients are predisposed to water retention. In this area, the choice of hyaluronic acid, the amount injected and the injection depth are decisive. A rigorous anatomical analysis is essential to limit the risk of prolonged swelling and achieve a natural result.

How can you recognise normal oedema after an injection ?

After a hyaluronic acid injection, moderate oedema is a usual reaction. It most often remains limited to the treated area, peaks during the first few days and then subsides spontaneously.
It may be accompanied by slight tenderness, minor bruising or a feeling of tightness associated with the injection. These symptoms are part of the usual after-effects of treatment and gradually disappear without any particular intervention.
However, the speed of recovery varies from one patient to another, depending on the treated area and each individual's reaction.

When should you be concerned about swelling after a hyaluronic acid injection ?

Complications after a hyaluronic acid injection are rare, but certain symptoms warrant immediate medical assessment. Severe or unusual pain, a change in skin colour, rapidly increasing swelling, a marked inflammatory reaction, visual disturbances or the development of a particularly tender area should prompt a rapid consultation.
Similarly, oedema occurring several weeks or months after treatment requires medical advice to investigate its cause.
Although these situations remain exceptional, they are a reminder that a hyaluronic acid injection is a medical procedure based on a rigorous indication and appropriate follow-up.

Why can oedema appear long after an injection ?

More rarely, some patients may experience delayed swelling several weeks or months after an injection. A consultation can identify the origin of the swelling and allow appropriate treatment to be offered.
There are various possible causes :
• A delayed inflammatory reaction.
• Local accumulation of product.
• Interaction with certain inflammatory factors.
• Water retention in a sensitive area.

How can swelling be reduced after a hyaluronic acid injection ?

The management of oedema depends above all on its origin. Following a recent injection, the swelling observed most often corresponds to a normal tissue reaction and subsides spontaneously over the following days.
During this period, a few precautions help avoid disrupting the natural course of treatment :

  • Follow the recommendations provided at the end of the session.
  • Avoid any pressure on or manipulation of the injected area.
  • Wait until the oedema has completely disappeared before assessing the result.

However, vigorously massaging the treated region or following advice found on the Internet without medical guidance is discouraged. Inappropriate manipulation can alter the distribution of hyaluronic acid, sustain local inflammation or compromise the result achieved.

Does oedema mean that the injection has gone wrong ?

No. The presence of oedema in the days following a hyaluronic acid injection does not indicate the quality of the result. This concern is common, particularly with a first treatment, because the appearance of the face immediately after the session does not yet reflect the final result.
Over the following days, swelling gradually subsides, hyaluronic acid integrates into the tissues and volume stabilises. Only after this phase can the result be reliably assessed.
Before this time, any impression of excessive correction or asymmetry should be interpreted cautiously, as it most often corresponds to the normal course of treatment.

Can oedema be completely avoided after an injection ?

It is not possible to completely prevent oedema after a hyaluronic acid injection. However, its severity can be limited by an appropriate injection strategy. The choice of product, the amount injected, respect for anatomical planes and the precision of the procedure directly influence the tissue reaction.
The quality of a result therefore does not depend solely on the hyaluronic acid used. It relies on a prior analysis of the face, a correctly established indication and a technique adapted to each area. Anticipating how the tissues will react is an integral part of treatment.

Oedema after a hyaluronic acid injection : key points to remember

The development of oedema after a hyaluronic acid injection is a usual tissue reaction. The volume observed in the hours or first few days following treatment does not necessarily reflect the final result and most often subsides gradually.
The quality of the result relies above all on an appropriate indication, a rigorous injection technique and a thorough knowledge of anatomy. This approach helps limit risks, support the natural evolution of the tissues and achieve a harmonious result.
