CAN YOU SMOKE AFTER A HYALURONIC ACID INJECTION ?

Last updated : 27 May 2026

Hyaluronic acid has become one of the most popular treatments for plumping, smoothing and rehydrating skin. Although its benefits are well known, certain lifestyle habits — including smoking — may compromise its effects.
Smoking after hyaluronic acid injection is not harmless. Often perceived as innocuous, it may not only impair aesthetic result quality but also accelerate product degradation in tissues, weaken skin and compromise result stability.
This article explains how smoking interferes with hyaluronic acid injections, why smoking immediately after a session is discouraged and the visible short- and long-term impacts.

Hyaluronic acid and smoking

Hyaluronic acid is a biocompatible gel naturally present in the body. Its role is to retain tissue water, ensure skin suppleness and elasticity and contribute to renewal. Injected into the dermis, it acts as a hydrating matrix that restores volume, fills wrinkles and revitalises weakened areas.
Tobacco is a powerful vasoconstrictor. It narrows blood vessels, reduces tissue oxygenation, slows healing and impairs microcirculation.
Smoking after injection exposes the product to an unfavourable biological environment when it needs optimal conditions to stabilise and integrate correctly into tissues.

What effects does smoking have on hyaluronic acid injections ?

Smoking directly influences skin and filler longevity. After hyaluronic acid injection, it may compromise result quality by impairing gel integration and reducing longevity.
The first consequence concerns product duration. By accelerating skin metabolism, smoking promotes hyaluronic acid degradation by the body. Toxins from cigarette combustion create an oxidative cellular environment that accelerates absorption. The gel then dissolves faster.
Smoking also harms proper gel integration. A successful injection depends as much on product quality as on its ability to stabilise harmoniously in tissues. Cigarettes limit cellular oxygenation and generate oxidative stress disrupting this integration phase. This may cause uneven product distribution, slight asymmetries or persistent inflammation.
Finally, smoking increases the risk of minor side effects after treatment. By slowing natural skin repair mechanisms, it makes skin more reactive and fragile. Bruising, redness or swelling may then be more pronounced or last longer than normal.

Is there a waiting period before smoking after a hyaluronic acid injection ?

Medically, avoiding smoking for 24 to 48 hours after hyaluronic acid injection is strongly advised. This period is essential for tissue stabilisation, proper microcirculation recovery and optimal product integration. By generating oxidative stress and vasoconstriction, smoking compromises this tissue adaptation phase.
This recommendation particularly applies to the most sensitive areas, such as lips with their rich blood supply, dark circles where skin is thin and fragile, or nasolabial folds subject to repeated movement.

Hyaluronic acid injections in regular smokers

In long-term smokers, tobacco acts chronically on skin. It gradually impairs radiance, dilates pores, promotes micro-wrinkles and accelerates loss of skin density. Despite aesthetic care, these signs often remain more pronounced and harder to correct.
Hyaluronic acid injections may reduce some of these effects and visibly improve skin quality but cannot entirely neutralise damage from prolonged smoking.
Results are also frequently less even, less durable and require more closely spaced maintenance sessions.
In this context, clear dialogue between physician and patient remains essential to adapt the protocol to each person’s actual needs and skin condition.

Hyaluronic acid, smoking and skin ageing

Smoking is one of the main factors in premature skin ageing. It impairs dermal structure by weakening collagen fibres, slowing elastin production and weakening epidermal barrier function.
Over the long term, these changes cause earlier wrinkles, progressive skin thinning and reduced hydration. Aesthetic treatment results then become less visible and shorter-lived.

Can smokers have hyaluronic acid injections ?

Smokers can certainly receive hyaluronic acid injections. However, the physician will consider smoking when selecting the product, injected volume and overall strategy.
Results may also be less durable or require more frequent maintenance. Complementary treatments may be offered to optimise skin quality and prolong effects.

In summary : is smoking after hyaluronic acid injection risky ?

Smoking after hyaluronic acid injection is not prohibited but strongly discouraged. Tobacco compromises good tissue blood supply, increases minor complication risks such as bruising and reduces result durability. To ensure optimal product integration and a quality aesthetic result, stopping tobacco consumption for at least 48 hours after the session is recommended.
For regular smokers, injections remain possible, but expectations must be adjusted.
