AT WHAT DEPTH SHOULD A SKINBOOSTER BE INJECTED ?

Dernière mise à jour : 28 May 2026

A precise injection plane is essential for a natural, even result.
Skinbooster is often presented as a light, non-volumising treatment without visible transformation. Yet behind this apparent simplicity lies a demanding injection technique on which the quality, evenness and longevity of effects depend.
Injection depth plays a decisive role here.
An overly superficial injection causes visible irregularities.
Conversely, if the product is placed too deeply, its action becomes limited and the expected benefits do not develop fully.
Precisely adjusting injection depth therefore optimises Skinbooster effectiveness, ensuring a result that is safe, harmonious and consistent with patient expectations.

Skinbooster objectives

Skinbooster is not intended to alter muscle movement or add facial volume. Its aim is quite different : an intradermal treatment intended to restore deep dermal hydration, stimulate fibroblast activity and improve overall skin appearance in density, suppleness and luminosity.
To be effective, Skinbooster must be injected precisely within the dermis. An overly superficial injection limited to the epidermis — a protective layer without a blood supply — or one too deep in the hypodermis, composed mainly of fatty tissue, would be unsuitable and deprive the treatment of its benefits.
Human skin consists of three main layers. At the surface lies the epidermis, a thin protective layer that acts as a barrier but does not directly contribute to skin quality. Deep down lies the hypodermis, subcutaneous tissue rich in fat cells providing structural support but without a notable impact on skin radiance or firmness. Between these layers lies the dermis, the skin’s true functional core, rich in collagen, elastic fibres, nerves, blood vessels and fibroblasts, cells essential to tissue regeneration.
It is precisely into this middle to deep dermis that Skinbooster must be injected. This area contains the skin’s main water reservoir and houses the cells responsible for skin renewal and density.
An overly superficial injection risks unattractive side effects such as irregularities or a Tyndall effect. Conversely, if deposited too deeply into the hypodermis, the product loses all effectiveness because it no longer interacts with the structures responsible for skin quality and vitality.

What injection depth for a Skinbooster ?

The exact injection depth varies according to several parameters, particularly the nature of the product used — its viscosity, structure and degree of cross-linking —, the anatomical treatment area, chosen technique (needle or cannula) and, of course, the doctor’s experience. On average, the ideal depth is between 1,5 and 3 mm beneath the skin surface, meaning the reticular dermis, a key area where hydration and cellular stimulation are most effective.
In practice, when injecting with a needle, the visual guide is the formation of small, subtle, even papules indicating injection into the correct plane. The skin then appears slightly raised without excessive blanching, indicating harmonious product diffusion.
With a cannula, injection generally takes place a little deeper, between the deep dermis and superficial hypodermis. This fanning or nappage technique is particularly suited to extensive areas such as the cheeks, neck or décolletage.
However, adapting the method to each anatomical region remains essential.

What are the risks of an incorrect injection depth ?

An injection at an inappropriate depth can cause various adverse effects.
If the product is placed too close to the skin surface, it can cause a bluish reflection known as the Tyndall effect and small visible or palpable irregularities. The result then becomes unattractive and less even, and may be accompanied by redness, irritation or localised inflammatory reactions.
Conversely, when the injection is too deep, treatment effectiveness is compromised. The incorrectly positioned product no longer acts on skin quality and its effects become imperceptible. In this case, diffuse swelling is sometimes observed without real aesthetic improvement, corresponding to an unnecessary injection.
These risks explain why medical expertise is essential. A thoroughly mastered technique ensures even Skinbooster distribution, balanced diffusion and harmonious integration into the dermis. This is indispensable for a natural, safe and lasting result.

Skinbooster and similar products : does depth vary by brand ?

Skinbooster injection depth varies with the brand and formulation. Each product has specific characteristics — particularly concentration, viscosity and hyaluronic acid cross-linking — determining the appropriate injection technique and optimal depth.
Some Skinboosters consist of very fluid hyaluronic acid combined with a dermal revitalising complex, intended for injection into the superficial to middle dermis using multiple points or nappage. They mainly aim to revive complexion radiance and improve skin firmness.
Other Skinboosters are designed for injection into the middle dermis. Through varying degrees of cross-linking, they adapt well to thin skin and offer a smoothing, softening effect.
Mesotherapy products are injected very superficially, either through nappage or as micro-papules. These products are particularly indicated for preventing ageing in young skin or skin seeking radiance.
Some Skinboosters are highly concentrated and non-cross-linked. They require deeper injection between the deep dermis and hypodermis. Their action is overall skin remodelling without a volumising effect.
It is therefore essential to follow each product’s injection protocols strictly to ensure procedural safety, harmonious product integration and an optimal result.

In conclusion : Skinbooster injection depth

Skinbooster injection depth plays a decisive role in treatment success.
Injecting the product at the correct depth,, with a suitable schedule and rigorous technique, achieves a natural result : visibly better-hydrated, denser and better-tolerated skin without a risk of overcorrection or discomfort.
Behind its apparent simplicity, this treatment actually requires precise technical skill and thorough knowledge of skin anatomy. This expertise makes all the difference between a harmonious, imperceptible result and a poorly controlled injection lacking real effectiveness or producing an overly visible result.
