Post-injection swelling
What is oedema after hyaluronic acid injection ?
Oedema is temporary swelling caused by fluid accumulating beneath the skin. After hyaluronic acid injection, this reaction is common and entirely normal.
Why does swelling appear after injection ?
Swelling, or post-injection oedema, is a normal bodily response after hyaluronic acid treatment. It results from several physiological mechanisms. Inserting the needle or cannula causes local microtrauma, even minimal, producing temporary inflammation while tissues repair. Added to this is hyaluronic acid’s hydrophilic nature : it attracts and retains water, potentially causing slight retention in sensitive areas such as lips, dark circles or tear troughs. Finally, some facial regions with a richer blood supply or thinner skin, such as the nose or eye contour, may react more strongly.
In the vast majority of cases, swelling remains moderate, localised, painless and fully reversible within days. It is a normal stage of product integration that resolves naturally.
How long does swelling last after hyaluronic acid injection ?
Swelling duration varies according to several factors : treated area, quantity injected, gel density and individual responsiveness. More sensitive skin or skin prone to water retention may take slightly longer to settle.
On average, swelling remains moderate and temporary. In lips, with a rich blood supply and considerable mobility, it often persists twenty-four to seventy-two hours. In cheekbones, chin or nasolabial folds, it most often disappears within one to two days. In areas such as dark circles or tear troughs, it may last five to seven days.
In all cases, this is entirely normal and temporary. The face gradually regains its natural appearance as hyaluronic acid integrates and inflammation disappears.
Advice to limit swelling before hyaluronic acid injection
Certain precautions reduce swelling intensity, particularly in patients who swell easily.
- Avoid alcohol.
- Avoid anticoagulant medicines in the preceding days after consulting the prescribing physician.
- Hydrate well before treatment.
What can reduce swelling quickly after injection ?
The following habits are recommended in the hours and days after hyaluronic acid injection to promote quick, natural swelling resolution :
- Apply cold cautiously : gently place a cold pack or cool cloth on the area for five to ten minutes. Cold causes vasoconstriction : limiting vessel dilation, reducing inflammation and slowing swelling spread. Never apply ice directly to skin, as it may cause burns.
- Sleep with your head slightly elevated : on the night after injection, an additional pillow is recommended. This limits fluid stagnation and prevents swelling, particularly in lips and around the eyes.
- Avoid heat : during the first forty-eight hours, avoid very hot showers, saunas, steam rooms, hot tubs and direct sun or artificial UV exposure. Heat dilates blood vessels and may increase swelling.
- Limit intense exertion : pausing sustained sport or any activity increasing blood pressure for twenty-four to forty-eight hours is preferable. This helps reduce local inflammation.
- Do not massage without medical advice : unsupervised massage may displace product, disrupt integration or increase swelling. Unless explicitly instructed by your physician, avoid manipulating the injected area.
- Apply appropriate soothing skincare : for slight tension or minor bruises, arnica gel may be applied locally. A soothing, non-comedogenic, fragrance-free cream also calms skin. Some patients may additionally use homeopathic arnica granules on medical advice. However, avoid overly rich, perfumed or irritating products.
Is there treatment to help swelling subside faster ?
In some cases, the physician may recommend treatment to accelerate swelling resolution. Depending on the situation, this may be a prescribed low-dose anti-inflammatory medicine or natural draining solutions such as arnica, bromelain or red vine extracts.
Nevertheless, take nothing without medical advice. Even natural products may interfere with proper hyaluronic acid integration or conceal signs useful for medical follow-up. Following your physician’s personalised recommendations is therefore preferable for optimal results and safe recovery.
When should swelling cause concern ?
In the vast majority of cases, swelling after hyaluronic acid injection is mild and temporary. However, certain signs require prompt consultation. Seek medical advice if swelling intensifies rather than decreases after seventy-two hours, or is accompanied by significant pain, pronounced redness or local warmth. Skin becoming pale, purplish or showing signs suggesting necrosis is an emergency. Persistent asymmetry beyond ten to fifteen days also deserves review.
These situations remain exceptional, but early diagnosis checks for excessive inflammation or local complications and allows prompt intervention if needed.
Oedema or allergic reaction : how can they be distinguished ?
Mild swelling is a usual reaction after hyaluronic acid injection. It most often appears quickly and decreases gradually within 24 to 72 hours. It generally remains localised and only slightly painful.
More rarely, an allergic reaction may occur, particularly to an injected component such as lidocaine. Symptoms are then often more pronounced : significant or persistent swelling, diffuse redness, itching, burning or unusual pain.
With these signs, or if swelling does not improve, contact your physician promptly for assessment and appropriate management.
Habits to avoid worsening swelling
In the following days, certain actions should be avoided to prevent disrupted product integration. Do not massage unless expressly advised. Inappropriate massage could displace product and compromise harmonious tissue integration.
Avoid prolonged pressure on the injected area, particularly at night : for example, do not sleep with your cheek pressed against the pillow on the first night, allowing natural stabilisation.
Finally, aggressive products or treatments such as exfoliants, warming products or irritating cosmetics are discouraged. They may slow swelling resolution and impair final results.
Resting skin for the first forty-eight hours promotes optimal integration and a natural result.
In summary : swelling after hyaluronic acid injection
Mild swelling after hyaluronic acid injection is entirely normal. This temporary skin response fades within days with appropriate habits : applying cold, resting, maintaining hydration and avoiding heat.
Trying to eliminate swelling too quickly is therefore neither necessary nor desirable. Resolution occurs naturally as product integrates and inflammation disappears. If in doubt or the progression seems unusual, contact your physician, who can assess, reassure and adjust care appropriately if needed.
