ARE HYALURONIC ACID INJECTIONS PAINFUL ?

Last updated : 27 May 2026

Hyaluronic acid is now one of the most widely used products in aesthetic medicine : wrinkle filling, skin hydration (Skinboosters), non-surgical lifting techniques and definition of certain facial contours. Although results are widely recognised, one question often arises during initial consultations : “Does it hurt ?”. In other words, are hyaluronic acid injections painful ?
hyaluronic acid injections do not hurt when performed by an experienced physician. Thanks to current techniques, good preparation and quality products, this treatment is now quick, comfortable and well tolerated.

Hyaluronic acid : what to know before proceeding

What does a hyaluronic acid injection feel like ?

Hyaluronic acid injection is a quick, generally well-tolerated procedure. It uses very fine needles or flexible cannulas, chosen according to the treatment area and desired result. The technique is gentle and gradual, allowing precise volume control and continuous adaptation to facial structure.
Most products contain a local anaesthetic such as lidocaine, reducing sensation during injection and making the session comfortable. In some cases, anaesthetic cream may also be applied beforehand to optimise patient comfort.

Very moderate pain during injection

In the vast majority of cases, hyaluronic acid injections cause little or no pain. Sensation varies according to several factors : the treated area, individual sensitivity, technique used, comfort measures provided and, above all, physician expertise.
It is generally described as discomfort rather than actual pain : slight tingling, pressure or brief tension as the needle or cannula passes.
With advances in products and techniques, sessions have become quick, precise and very well tolerated, even by the most sensitive patients.

Which areas are most sensitive ?

Certain facial regions are naturally more sensitive because of their many nerve endings, mobility or thin skin.
The lips are generally the most sensitive area because of constant mobility and abundant nerve endings.
Dark circle injection, where skin is very thin and hyaluronic acid is placed deeply against the bone, may also be uncomfortable.
Areas such as cheekbones, chin or mandibular line tolerate injections better, with much subtler sensations. Experience also depends on the needle or cannula type and physician expertise : a slow, controlled and precise procedure greatly minimises discomfort.

Are body injections with HYAcorp painful ?

For body contouring using HYAcorp injections — particularly the buttocks or hip dips — local anaesthesia is always planned to ensure optimal comfort. It may be administered through anaesthetic cream or a small injection, depending on the area and patient sensitivity.
The session, averaging thirty to sixty minutes, is generally very well tolerated, even when substantial volume is injected. Most patients experience no particular pain afterwards, apart from occasional mild, temporary muscular discomfort comparable to soreness, which disappears spontaneously within one or two days.

What solutions relieve or prevent pain during injection ?

Patient comfort is central to every injection session. Modern techniques and physician experience now effectively prevent pain and make the procedure almost painless while maintaining high injection precision.

  • Anaesthetic cream : an anaesthetic cream (such as EMLA®) may be applied 30 to 45 minutes before the session. It reduces painful sensations, particularly in lips or the eye contour.
  • Syringes containing local anaesthetic : today, most injectable hyaluronic acids contain a low dose of lidocaine, a local anaesthetic incorporated directly into the product. This makes sessions more comfortable.
  • The cannula technique : unlike a needle, which penetrates more superficially, a cannula is a rounded-tip instrument that does not traumatise tissues. It reduces entry points, haematomas and perceived pain — particularly across extensive areas.
  • A personalised approach : the physician adapts injection technique, pace and depth to each patient’s tolerance. In some cases, local anaesthesia by injection may also be offered (particularly for lips), although rarely necessary.

Is it painful after a hyaluronic acid injection session ?

After the session, a feeling of tension or tightness in the treated area is common, sometimes with mild tenderness for 24 to 48 hours or localised swelling, particularly in lips or cheekbones.
These effects are normal and temporary, caused by the injection itself and the skin’s natural response. They are not intense and disappear spontaneously within a few days.

Should a painkiller be taken ?

In the vast majority of cases, a painkiller is unnecessary before or after hyaluronic acid injection. The procedure is generally well tolerated and discomfort minimal. If uncomfortable, simple paracetamol may relieve temporary tenderness. However, aspirin and anti-inflammatory medicines are best avoided, as they may increase the risk of minor bruising after the session.

In summary : pain or simple discomfort during hyaluronic acid injection ?

Hyaluronic acid injections are not considered painful but rather slightly uncomfortable and most often well tolerated.
The most sensitive areas are lips, dark circles and nose.
Modern techniques (cannula, lidocaine, topical anaesthesia) make sessions increasingly comfortable, even for first-time or apprehensive patients.
After injection, mild temporary discomfort is possible but generally requires no particular treatment.
Choosing an experienced, attentive physician equipped with the latest techniques makes the injection experience gentle and reassuring.
