HOW CAN LUMPS AFTER HYALURONIC ACID INJECTION BE REMOVED ?

Last updated : 27 May 2026

Hyaluronic acid is a leading product in aesthetic medicine.
Although treatment is generally safe, effective and well tolerated, small lumps sometimes appear beneath the skin in the injected area.
Although often mild, this raises concerns : is it normal ? Is it temporary ? Is intervention needed ?
There is generally no cause for concern : these irregularities are most often temporary and easily corrected.
This article explains why they appear, how to remove them and when consultation is appropriate.

Why can lumps appear after injection ?

Small lumps after hyaluronic acid injection may have different explanations depending on when they appear.
In the first days, they are most often a temporary, harmless reaction. Soon after injection, a small irregularity is commonly felt, sometimes a subtle nodule beneath the skin. This is generally mild and temporary. It may reflect slight product accumulation at a specific point, localised swelling (oedema), mild natural inflammation afterwards or simply incomplete gel integration.
These lumps are often soft, mobile and painless. They disappear on their own within a few days, generally seven to ten, as product integrates and skin regains balance.
Longer term, these irregularities may indicate excess product or incomplete integration. If they persist beyond two weeks or become visible, they may involve locally excessive product, gel too thick for the area, poorly distributed accumulation in minimally mobile tissue such as the eye contour or, more rarely, a delayed inflammatory reaction called a granuloma.
Consulting the injecting physician is then important to assess the lump, determine its cause and propose the most appropriate solution. Corrective treatment is often simple and quick when performed early.

What can make these lumps disappear ?

Before considering treatment, understanding the origin of these lumps is essential. Depending on their nature — inflammation, fibrosis or residual accumulation — different solutions reduce or eliminate them.

  • Do not self-massage without medical advice : the first instinct is often to massage. This may sometimes help distribute product slightly, but poor massage may also cause migration, inflammation or asymmetry. Consult the injecting physician before any manipulation. Only they can determine whether massage is useful and whether it should be performed by them or under supervision.
  • Observe progress for a few days : if the lump appeared recently (less than a week), is soft, painless and barely visible, monitor without intervening and avoid heavy-coverage or occlusive make-up. It often disappears without treatment.
  • Physician-performed massage : in some cases, the physician can perform targeted massage to even gel distribution. Performed in the practice, this procedure carries no risk and often quickly reduces irregularities.

How can lumps after injection be prevented ?

The best prevention relies on physician expertise and adherence to post-injection instructions.

  • Precise injection technique : selecting the right product (density, fluidity, cross-linking) for the area : respecting the appropriate plane (deep dermis, hypodermis, against bone) ; even distribution through massage after injection ; injecting the correct quantity.
  • A product suited to the area : overly thick hyaluronic acid injected into a mobile area (such as lips or the eye contour) tends to create nodules or irregularities. Product choice is therefore essential for a natural result without complications.
  • Following aftercare : avoid touching, rubbing or massaging for the first 24 to 48 hours ; avoid exercise, heat, saunas or steam rooms ; sleep on your back if possible to avoid prolonged pressure.

When should you consult promptly ?

Consult without delay if : the nodule becomes painful, red, hard or warm ; substantial swelling, fever or skin colour change occurs ; or you have a history of allergic or immune reactions.
These signs may indicate persistent inflammation, infection or a rare complication. They require prompt, appropriate medical assessment.

Conclusion : lumps after hyaluronic acid injection

Small areas of hardness after hyaluronic acid injection are sometimes normal, particularly in the first days.
If soft, mobile and painless, these small lumps often reflect a mild local reaction or uneven but temporary distribution. In most cases, they resolve spontaneously within days.
However, if they persist beyond two weeks or become tender, consulting the injecting physician to determine the cause is essential.
Depending on the situation, several solutions may be considered : physician-performed massage or simple monitoring.
An experienced physician, quality product and rigorous adherence to aftercare are the keys to a natural, harmonious and lasting result.
