ARE LASER TREATMENTS EFFECTIVE FOR ELIMINATING DARK CIRCLES ?

Last updated : 6 July 2026

The eyes are the mirror of the soul, as the saying goes. Yet dark circles beneath the eyes can dull facial radiance, creating an impression of fatigue or premature ageing. Faced with this major aesthetic concern, laser treatments are attracting growing interest. But are they truly effective at eliminating dark circles ? This article reviews the different laser techniques available, their effectiveness according to dark circle type, and alternatives for rejuvenated-looking eyes.

Treatment adapted to different types of dark circles

Before considering treatment, identifying the nature of dark circles is essential, as their origin directly determines the therapeutic strategy.
Some dark circles have a brown colour, often associated with hyperpigmentation or genetic predisposition : these are pigmented dark circles.
Others have a bluish or purplish hue, resulting from insufficient blood microcirculation or skin too thin to conceal the vessels : these are vascular dark circles.
Hollow dark circles result from volume loss in the lower eyelid, creating a shadow that accentuates a tired appearance.
Finally, mixed dark circles combine several of these characteristics and require more comprehensive management.
Only a careful assessment by an experienced physician can precisely determine the type of dark circles and identify the most appropriate treatment, thereby ensuring a natural, harmonious result.

A solution for brown dark circles : pigment lasers

Pigmented dark circles, often resistant to conventional cosmetic products, may benefit from pigment-targeting laser sessions. These devices specifically target melanin accumulated beneath the skin. Unfortunately, results are variable and temporary, and this technique often causes rebound pigmentation associated with post-laser inflammation.
Q-Switched laser emits short, intense pulses that fragment melanin pigments, facilitating their elimination by the body. This treatment is particularly effective for dark circles of pigmentary origin, especially in fair-skinned patients.
Through its ultra-short pulses, PicoSure® laser targets deep pigments without damaging surrounding tissues. It is indicated for brown or black dark circles, offering notable improvement after a few sessions.
These treatments generally require several sessions spaced a few weeks apart. Rigorous sun protection is recommended to prevent pigment recurrence.

Reducing bluish dark circles : vascular lasers

Vascular dark circles result from increased visibility of blood vessels beneath thin, fragile skin. Their bluish appearance is caused by impaired microcirculation, which darkens the eyes and accentuates the impression of fatigue.
Treatment uses vascular lasers, particularly LCP laser. This targets haemoglobin, the pigment in red blood cells, and acts directly on the small dilated vessels responsible for the colour. Laser light causes selective coagulation of visible capillaries, improving local circulation and gradually reducing the intensity of dark circles.
Depending on the case, one to three sessions are enough to achieve a notable improvement. Results evolve week after week, with gradual reduction of the bluish hue.
Treatment is well tolerated. However, it causes pronounced swelling for a few days, a temporary effect that is part of the normal process before gradual improvement in the treated area.
Recurrence is common.

Revitalising the eye contour : fractional lasers

Fractional lasers, such as fractional CO2 laser or Erbium laser, work by stimulating collagen production and improving skin quality. They are particularly indicated for dark circles associated with skin ageing.
This laser creates microperforations in the skin, inducing cell regeneration and improved skin elasticity. It effectively reduces fine lines and firms eyelid skin. It is a treatment of choice for patients with dark circles associated with skin laxity and periorbital fine lines.
A few days of social downtime may be necessary because of redness or peeling. Results are visible after one to two weeks and improve over the following months.

The limitations of lasers for hollow dark circles

Hollow dark circles result from volume loss beneath the lower eyelid and are not suitable for laser treatment. For this indication, hyaluronic acid injections are the most effective solution.
The product is precisely injected to fill the hollow, restore volume and soften the shadow that darkens the eyes. The result appears immediately, remains natural and lasts between twelve and eighteen months on average.
The success of this treatment depends closely on the physician’s expertise. Only an experienced physician can ensure a safe procedure adapted to this area’s delicate anatomy and limit the risk of adverse effects.

Treatments for mixed dark circles

Their management requires a combined approach addressing every factor involved.

  • Pigment-targeting laser to reduce hyperpigmentation
  • Vascular laser to reduce vessel visibility
  • Hyaluronic acid injections to fill hollows
  • Mesolift, PRX-T33 peel to revitalise the skin

This personalised approach effectively treats each component of dark circles for a harmonious, lasting result.

Laser treatment protocols for dark circles

A properly conducted laser treatment protocol relies on an accurate diagnosis and planning adapted to the nature of the dark circles.
The number of sessions depends on the type of laser.

  • Q-Switched laser for pigmented dark circles : 3 to 5 sessions spaced 4 weeks apart are generally necessary for visible, lasting results.
  • LCP laser for vascular dark circles : 2 to 3 sessions are sufficient on average, with an interval of 6 weeks between treatments.
  • Fractional lasers for skin firming : 1 to 2 annual sessions may be considered depending on skin condition and the patient’s expectations.

After treatment, it is important to follow the physician’s instructions.

  • Application of repairing creams based on vitamins C and E to accelerate skin regeneration.
  • Strict avoidance of sun exposure for at least 4 weeks after the session, with systematic application of broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 50+).
  • For fractional laser treatment, allow 2 to 5 days of social downtime because of the erythema and peeling that follow the procedure.

These treatments must be performed by experienced physicians capable of selecting appropriate technical settings for each skin phototype and type of dark circle.

Laser treatment for dark circles : studies

The effectiveness of lasers in dark circle treatment is now supported by several clinical studies. A publication appearing in 2021 in the Journal of Cosmetic and Laser Therapy reports a satisfaction rate of 78 % among patients treated with Q-Switched laser for pigmented dark circles, with notable improvements in colour and skin quality after three sessions. For vascular dark circles, the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery demonstrated a significant reduction in blood vessel visibility after two Nd:YAG laser sessions, with results lasting up to twelve months.
However, this research highlights the importance of rigorous patient selection. Higher phototypes (IV to VI) have an increased risk of post-inflammatory pigmentation, requiring particular precautions. Similarly, laser treatments should not be performed in summer or after recent sun exposure, to limit complications.
Finally, experts emphasise that although lasers are effective on pigmented and vascular dark circles, they cannot correct hollow dark circles. They must therefore be incorporated into a comprehensive, non-invasive rejuvenation strategy and combined with other techniques, particularly volumising injections, for a complete, harmonious result.

Conclusion : lasers for rejuvenated eyes

In some cases, lasers offer an effective option for reducing pigmented or vascular dark circles. They improve skin quality and reduce visible irregularities, but their indication always depends on the type of dark circles and requires assessment by an experienced physician.
For hollow dark circles, hyaluronic acid injections remain the reference method. Complementary treatments, such as mesolift or mesotherapy, help revitalise the eye contour and enhance brightness around the eyes.
Combining these different techniques within personalised care delivers a visible, natural and non-invasive result while restoring a rested, harmonious appearance to the face.
