Hyaluronic acid injections in gynaecology are now generally regarded positively by both physicians and patients when performed for specific indications, particularly the restoration of labia majora volume and the treatment of vaginal dryness. Scientific studies published in recent years report high patient satisfaction rates and a favourable safety profile. However, the level of scientific evidence is stronger for some indications than for others.
Treatment efficacy is the primary criterion for evaluating any medical procedure. In this respect, the scientific evidence published over the past ten years has been generally reassuring.
A review published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology highlights that hyaluronic acid injections provide effective restoration of labia majora volume, with high aesthetic satisfaction rates and a low rate of complications. The authors conclude that this approach represents an effective alternative to certain more invasive surgical procedures for patients with labia majora hypotrophy.
Similar findings were reported in Dermatologic Therapy, where the authors observed a significant improvement in the appearance of this area, together with a positive perception of the results by patients after several months of follow-up.
Today, physicians consider hyaluronic acid the treatment of choice for correcting loss of volume in the labia majora without surgery.
This position is supported by several characteristics of the product. Hyaluronic acid is biocompatible and biodegradable. Its behaviour within the tissues is well established, thanks to several decades of use in aesthetic medicine and reconstructive surgery.
Satisfaction studies show that patients are among the strongest advocates of this technique.
In scientific publications on labia majora augmentation, satisfaction rates frequently exceed 80–90%, depending on the evaluation criteria used.
The reported benefits mainly include improved intimate aesthetics, restoration of age-related volume loss, and greater self-confidence.
Several studies also report improved daily comfort in women with fat loss in the labia majora. This benefit is particularly evident in postmenopausal women and in those who have experienced significant weight loss.
Interestingly, patients often describe the psychological benefits as being even greater than the purely aesthetic ones. The correction of long-standing insecurities and an improved body image appear to play a major role in overall satisfaction.
In a review published in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal, the authors concluded that vulvar hyaluronic acid injections have a favourable safety profile when injection protocols are properly followed. The reported complications are generally minor and temporary.
The most commonly reported side effects include mild swelling, temporary tenderness, and small bruises that resolve spontaneously within a few days.
The International Urogynecology Journal reported similar findings, highlighting the low rate of serious complications in the published case series.
However, the authors emphasise that treatment safety depends directly on the physician's experience. These injections require a thorough knowledge of vascular and nerve anatomy to avoid complications related to improper injection technique.
In the journal Menopause, several authors have investigated the role of treatments designed to address vulvar changes associated with hormonal ageing. The findings suggest that restoring the volume of the labia majora may improve the natural mechanical protection of the vulvar tissues and help reduce certain sensations of discomfort.
Some patients have reported reduced irritation caused by friction, greater comfort when wearing fitted clothing, and improved comfort during certain physical activities.
However, the researchers remain cautious. They emphasise that intimate comfort depends on many anatomical, hormonal, and psychological factors. Hyaluronic acid should therefore be considered as one component of a comprehensive approach to women's intimate health.
When the opinions of physicians, patient feedback, and the findings of scientific publications are considered together, a clear trend emerges: hyaluronic acid injections in gynaecology appear to be an effective and safe solution for restoring the volume of the labia majora and improving certain aspects of intimate comfort. Studies published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, Dermatologic Therapy, Aesthetic Surgery Journal, International Urogynecology Journal, and Menopause report consistently positive outcomes, with high patient satisfaction and low complication rates. However, the authors emphasise that these results depend on two essential conditions: careful patient selection and a thorough mastery of vulvar anatomy and injection techniques. As with any aesthetic medical procedure, the appropriateness of the indication and the physician's expertise are the key determinants of treatment safety and outcomes.
