WHEN TO STOP HYALURONIC ACID INJECTIONS IN THE FACE

Dernière mise à jour : 10 June 2026

Hyaluronic acid injections now play a major role in facial aesthetic medicine. Used judiciously, they restore lost volumes, support certain structures weakened by time and improve overall facial harmony. Their popularity rests on their effectiveness, reversibility and excellent tolerability when performed in a rigorous medical setting.
However, a question arises increasingly often during consultations in Geneva: should facial hyaluronic acid injections be stopped, and above all, when?
Contrary to certain misconceptions, stopping injections follows neither a fixed rule nor a predefined age. It is a complex medical decision based on assessing anatomy, the progression of ageing, tissue quality and the patient's feelings.

There is no universal duration for continuing injections

One of the most common mistakes is thinking that hyaluronic acid injections must continue uninterrupted, year after year, following the same pattern. In reality, there is no standard duration beyond which it is essential either to stop or, conversely, to continue.
The decision depends on multiple factors: the patient's biological age, the quality of the skin and underlying tissues, facial anatomy, previously treated areas and the individual response to injections.
For some patients, a few well-targeted sessions are enough to achieve lasting balance. For others, considered continuation is possible for several years, provided the treatment strategy is constantly adapted.

When hyaluronic acid no longer corrects but adds heaviness

One of the clearest signs that it is time to stop or pause hyaluronic acid injections is the appearance of facial heaviness. This does not necessarily result from technical errors; it may arise from gradual product accumulation in tissues no longer able to integrate it harmoniously.
A heavy-looking face may show: less defined contours, loss of natural relief, a swollen appearance without rejuvenation, or an impression of a frozen face despite no botulinum toxin injection.
In these situations, continuing injections risks worsening the imbalance rather than improving it. Stopping then becomes a logical medical choice.

When the patient no longer recognises themselves in the mirror: loss of naturalness

Beyond purely anatomical criteria, the patient's feelings are central to the decision to stop hyaluronic acid injections. Aesthetic medicine seeks not only a visible result but consistency between outward appearance and inner identity.
Certain signs should alert the doctor: feeling that you no longer recognise yourself, persistent dissatisfaction despite technically correct results, a need for increasingly frequent corrections or excessive focus on tiny details.
In these situations, stopping injections may be an essential therapeutic step, restoring a more peaceful relationship with self-image.

When the face loses its individuality

An initial warning sign is a change in your facial identity. Hyaluronic acid injections aim to restore, correct or harmonise features, not transform them until recognition is compromised. It therefore becomes reasonable to consider stopping—or at least reducing—injections when:

  • Added volumes dominate the face's natural architecture, creating visible excess (exaggerated cheekbones, oversized lips or an overly pronounced chin or jaw).
  • You feel that you no longer recognise yourself in the mirror, or that your face tends towards stereotyped models widely circulated on social media, at the expense of your individuality.

When perceived effectiveness decreases

Over time, when injections continue without an overall reassessment of the aesthetic strategy, the face may look overloaded without becoming younger or fresher. This may result in:

  • An increasing need for volume to maintain the same effect, with ever more modest results.
  • Heaviness in certain areas (an excessively filled tear trough, a filled but immobilised nasolabial fold, thick but unnatural lips).
  • A mismatch between the investment (time, money, discomfort) and actual satisfaction.

When tissues become saturated

also constitutes a limiting factor. Particularly thin skin or skin weakened by ageing, sun exposure or certain conditions struggles to tolerate repeated volumising injections. Product accumulation then creates the risk:

  • Of producing unattractive contours such as irregularities, palpable or visible nodules, an undulating appearance or overcorrection.

  • Of altering natural anatomical relationships, with puffiness or distinct boundaries between injected and untreated areas.

  • Of placing artificial mechanical stresses on already stretched or sagging tissues.

In these situations, continuing injections is no longer an appropriate option. It is more coherent to consider stopping or limiting them and turning to better-suited alternatives, such as improving skin quality, lifestyle measures or, in certain precisely indicated cases, surgery.

When motivation becomes mainly psychological

Hyaluronic acid injections are not intended to treat profound distress, a self-esteem disorder or body dysmorphic disorder. It is time to question continued treatment when:

  • You feel anxious at the thought of volume decreasing, even subtly.
  • You seek a form of reassurance from each session that lasts only a few days.
  • You multiply treatment areas to hunt down the slightest “flaw” rather than seeking reasonable overall improvement.

In this situation, the best medical decision may be to pause injections, allow the face to stabilise and, if necessary, suggest psychological support. Continuing injections would only reinforce dependence on the procedure without addressing the underlying issue.

When life balance is compromised

Another often underestimated criterion is overall balance:

  • If the budget devoted to injections becomes a source of tension or guilt.
  • If appointments, recovery and organisational constraints occupy a disproportionate place in your schedule.
  • If you feel you are pursuing an ideal image at the expense of other priorities (general health, projects, social life).

This does not mean injections must always be ruled out, but that it is time to restore their proper place, or even take a break to regain a calmer relationship with your appearance.

How do you stop hyaluronic acid injections?

Stopping hyaluronic acid injections can be approached gradually, carefully and with full consideration:

  • By stopping touch-ups in certain areas to assess, once the product has been absorbed, what genuinely constitutes a concern or priority.

  • By spacing out sessions, reducing injected volumes and favouring targeted procedures, or temporarily shifting care towards improving skin quality (suitable treatments, superficial peels, rigorous sun protection).

  • By accepting the return of some facial folds, hollows and nuances, not as resignation but as an expression of harmonious ageing consistent with each person's age, history and identity.

Treatment breaks

In many cases, hyaluronic acid injections do not need to stop permanently. Treatment breaks may be enough to rebalance the face.
These breaks offer several advantages: reduced risk of overcorrection, better integration of products already injected, objective reassessment of needs and respect for the face's biological rhythm.
