Why is skin dehydrated after sun exposure?
After sun exposure, skin can become dehydrated because UV radiation, heat, wind, salt and chlorine damage its protective barrier and increase water loss.
UV radiation changes the stratum corneum and weakens skin barrier function. Heat and wind also promote water evaporation. At the beach or pool, salt and chlorine further worsen dehydration.
Dry and dehydrated skin should be distinguished. Dry skin mainly lacks lipids and is a skin type. Dehydrated skin lacks water: it is a temporary condition that can affect dry, normal, combination or oily skin.
After summer, dehydration may appear as tightness, a dull complexion, fine lines, uneven texture, peeling or make-up that does not stay in place as well.
Sun exposure can also cause other changes unrelated to dehydration: pigmentation spots and UV-related photoageing. Distinguishing insufficient water from other sun effects is therefore important.
Which home skincare rehydrates skin after summer?
A suitable routine suffices for mild dehydration. The principle is to supply water, limit its loss and repair the skin barrier.
Prioritise water-retaining ingredients (hyaluronic acid, glycerine) and barrier-repairing ingredients (ceramides, panthenol). Apply products to slightly damp skin to improve water retention. In the evening, a plant oil (jojoba, rosehip) adds nourishment.
Body skin has fewer sebaceous glands than facial skin and dehydrates faster: a lipid-replenishing balm on damp skin after showering is more effective than a standard cream. The décolletage, hands and lips need particular attention as the most exposed areas.
Applying sun protection is essential even after summer. UV radiation persists in September (and throughout the year), and further exposure delays repair.
Which treatments actually rehydrate skin?
When cosmetics no longer restore skin comfort and quality, medical treatments may provide a more effective response. Their aim is not simply to hydrate the surface, but to provide lasting improvement in skin condition.
Treatment choice depends above all on dehydration severity and the desired result. Some techniques provide deep hydration, while others mainly restore complexion radiance quickly.
Are Skinboosters the most suitable treatment after summer?
Skinboosters are particularly indicated for dehydrated skin. They involve injecting lightly cross-linked hyaluronic acid into the dermis to improve its water-retaining ability.
This treatment can be performed on the face, neck, décolletage or hands, areas particularly sun-exposed and often dehydrated after summer.
When is mesotherapy preferable?
Mesotherapy is a good option when skin looks tired and the main aim is to restore radiance. It involves very small injections of a mixture notably containing non-cross-linked hyaluronic acid, vitamins, amino acids and antioxidants.
Its action is more superficial than that of Skinboosters. It improves skin quality and superficial hydration and helps revive the complexion. Results appear gradually, and several sessions are generally needed for a lasting effect.
Is HydraFacial indicated after holidays?
HydraFacial is particularly suitable when skin lacks radiance but no longer has sun-related sensitivity and is no longer tanned.
This treatment deeply cleanses skin, removes dead cells and impurities, then provides immediate hydration through specific serums.
Results are visible quickly: skin looks clearer, fresher and more radiant. This treatment does not deeply hydrate skin; Hydrafacial provides superficial hydration.
Skinbooster, mesotherapy or HydraFacial: which should you choose?
The choice depends on the depth to reach, expected result and time available.
For lasting hydration of the face, décolletage or hands, a Skinbooster is generally most suitable. If the aim is to restore radiance to tired skin quickly, mesotherapy is an appropriate option. Finally, HydraFacial is particularly indicated for an immediate healthy glow without injections before an event.
These treatments can complement each other. HydraFacial may, for example, prepare skin for other treatments, while a Skinbooster course provides gradual, lasting improvement. The protocol is always defined during consultation according to your skin condition and objectives.
Can these treatments be performed immediately after sun exposure?
It is preferable to wait until skin has fully recovered before considering treatment. Skin still affected by sunburn, redness, peeling or any other irritation should not be treated.
As a general rule, waiting one to two weeks after intense sun exposure is advised to allow skin repair. During consultation, clinical examination assesses its condition and confirms inflammation has completely disappeared before the most appropriate treatment is offered.
Can these treatments correct pigmentation spots?
No. Their aim is to improve hydration, texture and radiance, but they do not treat sun-related pigmentation spots.
When these are present, specific management may be offered after medical examination. According to their origin and depth, this may involve depigmenting skincare, peels or laser sessions.
Does after-sun skincare prevent skin ageing?
These treatments improve skin quality and soften certain consequences of sun exposure. However, they cannot replace prevention. Skin ageing primarily results from accumulated ultraviolet effects over the years.
Daily sun protection remains the most effective way to limit wrinkles, pigmentation spots and lost firmness. Aesthetic medicine treatments complement prevention by helping skin regain hydration, suppleness and radiance.
