What is an “Injection Party”?
An “Injection Party” brings several people together for aesthetic injections in a group setting that is often sociable.
It may be organised in a flat, hotel, beauty salon or another location not normally intended for medical care. Injections are sometimes presented as a group activity, like a private event.
The problem is not the number of people present. It is the conditions in which the medical procedure is decided upon and performed.
Are “Injection Parties” legal?
Presenting an injection as an “Injection Party” does not change the rules governing the medical procedure.
Injections are reserved for doctors. Injectable products containing hyaluronic acid, Sculptra or botulinum toxin are also subject to specific supply conditions.
A doctor must practise in conditions compatible with patient safety, professional confidentiality, hygiene and quality of care. Organising injections in a party setting does not remove any of these obligations.
Regulations vary between countries. An “Injection Party” therefore cannot be considered legal or illegal solely on the basis of its name: who performs the injections, where, under what conditions and under which regulations must be examined.
Can aesthetic injections be performed at home?
Aesthetic injections are not intended to be performed in a patient's home or a location chosen for convenience. A doctor practises in an identified professional setting and cannot freely move their medical activity to any location.
Practising outside the usual premises must have a reason and meet conditions compatible with applicable professional rules. A medical necessity, such as certain home visits, cannot be equated with a doctor travelling to perform aesthetic injections during a party.
The location must also guarantee the conditions required for a medical procedure: hygiene, asepsis, lighting, suitable facilities, confidentiality, medical equipment, product traceability and immediate management of a complication.
A flat, hotel room, beauty salon or party venue does not necessarily provide these safeguards.
The aesthetic nature of an injection does not exempt it from the rules governing medical practice and patient safety.
Can you have an injection after drinking alcohol?
A person under the influence of alcohol should not make an aesthetic medical decision or receive an injection in this context.
Alcohol can impair judgement and compromise the quality of consent. It can also promote redness and bruising.
The presence of alcohol therefore creates an additional difficulty when injections are organised as part of an evening event.
What are the infection and hygiene risks at an Injection Party?
A needle or cannula passes through the skin and creates an entry point for microorganisms.
The skin must be properly cleansed and disinfected. Appropriate equipment must be used and aseptic rules respected throughout the procedure.
An environment with many people, movement, drinks or surfaces not intended for care makes suitable conditions harder to maintain.
Poor asepsis can promote a local infection or a more significant infectious complication.
What are the risks of a hyaluronic acid injection performed in poor conditions?
A hyaluronic acid injection performed in poor conditions can cause local, infectious or vascular complications, some of which may be serious.
Possible complications include infection, nodules, an inflammatory reaction or asymmetry. They are therefore not limited to the bruising and swelling commonly observed after an injection.
Accidental injection into a blood vessel can interrupt circulation and cause skin necrosis. In certain facial areas, there is also an exceptional but serious risk of a visual complication.
These complications need to be recognised quickly so that immediate treatment can be initiated.
Hyaluronic acid injections: why is emergency equipment essential?
A vascular complication associated with hyaluronic acid is an emergency.
The doctor must recognise the first signs and have the necessary means to intervene. When indicated, management may require hyaluronidase, which breaks down the injected hyaluronic acid.
It must also be possible to organise specialist care quickly when a complication exceeds what can be treated on site.
Injection safety therefore also depends on the arrangements in place when treatment does not proceed normally.
Why is traceability of the injected product important?
The patient must be able to know precisely which product has been injected.
The product name, reference, batch number and information about the injection ensure traceability.
These details become particularly important when a reaction appears several days, weeks or months after treatment.
A product bought online without a verifiable origin or traceability must not be injected.
Is an aesthetic injection performed by a doctor always safe?
No. Having an aesthetic injection performed by a doctor does not, on its own, guarantee the safety of the procedure. The conditions in which the injection is performed are also essential.
Safety depends on prior patient examination, anatomical knowledge, product choice, injection technique, respect for aseptic rules, traceability and the ability to recognise and manage a complication.
An aesthetic injection remains a medical procedure and must therefore be performed in conditions appropriate to its safety.
Injection Parties and medical confidentiality
A medical consultation requires the ability to speak with the patient confidentially.
Medical history, medication, allergies, a possible pregnancy or previous aesthetic procedures should not be discussed in front of other participants.
Facial examination and the decision to treat must also be possible without comments or influence from the group.
The group nature of an evening event does not remove the right to medical confidentiality.
How can you choose a safe doctor and setting for aesthetic injections in Geneva?
An aesthetic injection must be preceded by a genuine medical assessment and performed in conditions that allow complications to be prevented and treated.
The patient must know the identity and qualifications of the person injecting, the product used, the expected benefits, risks and possible after-effects. The product must be identifiable and traceable. Hygiene conditions must be appropriate and arrangements made to manage a complication.
Above all, the decision must remain individual, considered and independent of any commercial or social pressure.
An injection of hyaluronic acid or botulinum toxin is not a trivial beauty treatment. Turning an injection into a party event changes neither its medical nature nor the accompanying safety requirements.
