HOW TO APPLY YOUR SKINCARE : THE RIGHT DAILY GESTURES

Dernière mise à jour : 10 June 2026

A cosmetic product's effectiveness depends not only on formulation or ingredient quality, but also, often above all, on how it is applied. Consultations frequently reveal patients using perfectly suitable products in the wrong order.
Should serum precede or follow moisturiser? When should eye care be used? Should skin be massaged or tapped? These legitimate questions reflect a genuine desire to do things properly.
Clear, rational, scientific explanation of daily application is important to optimise benefits while respecting physiology.
This article offers a clear, structured, logical five-step routine and recommended techniques to preserve quality and health.

What is a good skincare routine?

Why does application order matter?

Skin acts as a selective barrier. For effectiveness, ingredients must be placed on clean skin, then penetrate superficial epidermal layers.
Applying an overly rich product too early can prevent lighter ingredients acting properly. Conversely, progressing from fluid to rich allows optimal absorption.
Application order is therefore not arbitrary: it follows simple physiological logic based on texture and action.

Step 1: cleanse and remove make-up

Cleansing is the indispensable foundation of every routine. Poorly cleansed skin can neither breathe properly nor benefit fully from care.
Throughout the day, skin accumulates sebum, impurities, pollution particles and make-up residue. Evening removal is essential. Morning cleansing removes excess sebum and toxins produced overnight.
Cleanser choice must suit type and sensitivity. It may be milk, micellar water, make-up-removing oil or gentle gel. Avoiding harsh formulas that damage the barrier is essential.
Non-foaming textures are generally used with cotton, gently moving from the centre outwards. Cleansing gels or oils are applied directly by hand to damp skin, then rinsed with lukewarm water.
Movements should remain slow and delicate, without excessive rubbing.

Step 2: toner to rebalance and prepare skin

Often neglected, toner nevertheless matters. It always follows cleansing on perfectly clean skin.
Its multiple goals are removing final impurities, refreshing and, above all, rebalancing pH often disrupted by water and cleansers.
Some toners also gently exfoliate, removing dead cells and improving radiance.
Apply toner with cotton using light presses, without rubbing. It is an ideal transition before care.

Step 3: eye care

The eye area is anatomically distinctive. Skin is thinner, more fragile and has fewer sebaceous glands, explaining faster ageing.
Products are specifically formulated with lighter formulas and adapted concentrations to limit irritation.
Certain ingredients, such as hyaluronic acid, improve hydration, smooth fine lines and reduce vascular and pigmented dark circles and bags.
Application must be especially gentle. A tiny amount suffices. Tap lightly, ideally with the ring finger, following the orbital bone from inside outwards.
These delicate movements stimulate microcirculation without irritation and promote penetration.

Step 4: serum

Serum is concentrated care for a precise concern: hydration, radiance, blemishes, ageing prevention or antioxidant action.
Its fluid texture penetrates more easily, explaining why it must always precede cream.
A small amount suffices. Warm slightly between hands before gently pressing across the face. Move from centre outwards without stretching skin.
Several compatible serums may sometimes be used, for example sebum regulation in the T-zone and anti-ageing elsewhere. However, this should remain measured.

Step 5: moisturiser to protect and strengthen skin

Moisturiser is essential for every skin type, including oily. It mainly strengthens the barrier, limits water loss and protects against external stressors.
It acts as a finishing layer, sealing in previous care and prolonging action.
Texture depends on needs: lighter for combination to oily skin, richer for dry or mature skin. Unsuitable cream can unbalance skin and promote blemishes or discomfort.
Apply across face, neck, décolletage and hands with gentle circular movements, then spread from inside outwards.

The right techniques when applying skincare

Beyond product order, application techniques decisively influence quality.
Movements should mainly be upward and outward to respect gravity and support firmness. Press lightly without stretching.
Overly firm massage or repeated rubbing can weaken tissues and promote redness or irritation.
Consistency is also essential. Cosmetics act long term and need daily morning and evening application for visible, lasting results.

Adapting your routine to skin and lifestyle

There is no standard routine. Every skin differs and evolves with age, climate, stress and possible aesthetic medical treatment.
Unsuitable care can be ineffective or harmful through barrier damage. Prefer a simple, coherent, personalised routine rather than many products.
Medical guidance adapts products and techniques to actual needs.

Applying skincare as an extension of aesthetic medicine

Within comprehensive ageing care, correct cosmetic application is inseparable from aesthetic treatments such as botulinum toxin or hyaluronic acid injections.
Well-maintained, respected and protected skin responds better to treatment and prolongs benefits. Daily techniques then become true preventive care.
