DEPRESSED SCAR : RESULTS BEFORE AND AFTER TREATMENT

Dernière mise à jour : 5 July 2026

Improvement in an indented scar is gradual and depends on its depth, age and skin quality. Aesthetic medicine treatments stimulate collagen remodelling and soften skin irregularities, but do not make a scar disappear completely. Before-and-after photographs illustrate results usually achieved, although every skin responds differently.

An indented scar before treatment

An indented scar is a loss of tissue in the dermis. Unlike thick or hypertrophic scars, it forms a depression of varying depth at the skin surface. This defect appears when collagen production during healing has been insufficient.
Indented scars are frequently observed after inflammatory acne, chickenpox, trauma or certain surgical procedures. They may be isolated or multiple and give skin an uneven appearance, particularly visible under oblique lighting.

Why do indented scars not disappear on their own?

Once healing is complete, the skin does not spontaneously regain its original architecture. The collagen deficit responsible for the depression persists over time, although the scar often becomes less visible over the years.
Cosmetics can improve skin hydration and quality, but cannot rebuild the deeper dermis. Significant improvement generally requires treatments that stimulate skin remodelling.

Which treatments can improve an indented scar?

Treatment choice depends on scar type, depth, age and the patient's phototype. Several techniques are often combined for greater improvement.
Fractional ablative laser is one of the reference treatments for indented scars. By creating columns of ablation in the skin, it stimulates new collagen production and promotes gradual scar tissue remodelling. Skin texture gradually improves over the six months following the session.
According to the indications, treatment may be complemented by other aesthetic medicine techniques to optimise results. The strategy is always personalised after clinical examination.

How many sessions are needed ?

Indented scars generally require several sessions. The number depends on lesion depth, extent and individual skin response.
Improvements are gradual. After each session, collagen remodelling continues for several months, explaining why the final result is not immediate. Care spread over time often provides more even, natural improvement.

What do before / after photographs of an indented scar show?

Before-and-after photographs assess changes in skin texture after treatment. They generally show shallower scars, a more regular skin surface and a more even complexion.
However, these images should be interpreted carefully. They illustrate results achieved in a particular patient under specific conditions and do not guarantee results. Improvement depends, in particular, on scar nature and age, the protocol used and each skin's collagen production capacity.

What results can reasonably be expected?

The aim is to soften scars so they are less noticeable in daily life, rather than eliminate them completely. In most cases, skin becomes smoother, depressions less pronounced and texture more even.
The degree of improvement varies between patients. Superficial scars generally respond better than very deep or old scars. Consultation establishes a realistic prognosis before care begins.

Who is a good candidate for indented scar treatment?

Treatments are intended for patients with stable scars, meaning no active inflammatory acne or ongoing healing process. Prior assessment is essential to identify scar type, check possible contraindications and define the most suitable protocol.
In some patients, active acne, rosacea or a pigmentation disorder should be treated before scar correction begins.
