CAN BOTULINUM TOXIN INJECTIONS BE DONE IN SUMMER ?

Dernière mise à jour : 10 June 2026

Botulinum toxin injections are now among the most frequently performed aesthetic medical procedures worldwide. They are mainly used to reduce certain expression lines in the upper third of the face, such as forehead lines, frown lines or crow's feet. When performed precisely and judiciously, they provide natural rejuvenation without freezing features or impairing facial expressiveness.
However, a question arises very frequently during consultations, particularly as warmer weather approaches: can botulinum toxin injections be performed in summer, or should you wait for a more suitable time?

Botulinum toxin and sun exposure

Botulinum toxin injections are now among the most frequently performed aesthetic medical procedures worldwide. They are mainly used to reduce certain expression lines in the upper third of the face, such as forehead lines, frown lines or crow's feet. When performed precisely and judiciously, they provide natural rejuvenation without freezing features or impairing facial expressiveness.
However, a question arises very frequently during consultations, particularly as warmer weather approaches: can botulinum toxin injections be performed in summer, or should you wait for a more suitable time?

What is botulinum toxin used for in aesthetic medicine?

Botulinum toxin is a molecule used in aesthetic medicine to act on certain expression lines. These wrinkles are related to repeated contraction of certain facial muscles. They mainly appear in the upper third of the face, a particularly expressive area.
Injecting very low doses of botulinum toxin into targeted muscles partially and temporarily relaxes their contraction. The overlying skin gradually relaxes, reducing existing wrinkles and preventing them from deepening.
Botulinum toxin does not fill wrinkles; its action is strictly muscular. It acts on the dynamic cause of a wrinkle rather than its static component, unlike hyaluronic acid injections.

Can you have botulinum toxin injections in summer?

Botulinum toxin injections can be performed all year round, including summer. Unlike certain aesthetic treatments, botulinum toxin is not photosensitising and is not altered by sun exposure.
There is therefore no strict seasonal contraindication to this treatment. This means it is entirely possible to schedule a session before holidays and summer.
However, as with any medical procedure, certain precautions must be followed to optimise the result and avoid adverse effects.

Is summer a medical contraindication to botulinum toxin injections?

From a strictly medical perspective, there is no formal contraindication to botulinum toxin injections in summer. International recommendations and professional societies do not mention a seasonal restriction.
The true contraindications remain the same throughout the year: pregnancy, breastfeeding, neuromuscular diseases, active skin infections at injection sites, known hypersensitivity to the toxin and egg allergy.
The idea that heat or sun cancels the effect of botulinum toxin is a myth.

Effects of heat and sun on botulinum toxin injections

Excessive heat does not alter botulinum toxin itself, but can influence skin circulation. Significant vasodilation can theoretically increase the risk of small bruises after injection, as is the case with any injection.
Direct sun exposure in the hours after injection can also accentuate a temporary local inflammatory reaction, such as redness or mild swelling. These effects remain mild and temporary but justify certain practical recommendations.

Why avoid the sun after botulinum toxin injections?

After a botulinum toxin injection, skin tissues enter a temporary phase of increased reactivity. Early sun exposure can then increase local inflammation, resulting in redness, swelling or persistent tenderness in injected areas.
In addition, sun-induced heat causes vasodilation and increased local blood flow, potentially disrupting the controlled diffusion and optimal binding of botulinum toxin at motor endplates. This interaction can compromise treatment effectiveness and affect the quality, precision or longevity of the expected aesthetic result.

Precautions to follow after a botulinum toxin injection in summer

In the hours after a botulinum toxin injection, it is recommended to avoid excessive heat sources. This includes direct sun exposure, sauna or steam room sessions and intense physical exertion.
In general, it is advisable to wait at least 24 hours before ultraviolet exposure. This allows the product to bind correctly at neuromuscular junctions and begin acting without interference.
During the first hours, it is also recommended to avoid massaging injected areas, lying down immediately after the session, wearing a helmet or equipment that compresses the face, or exercising.
Heat-generating aesthetic procedures, such as lasers or intense pulsed light, should be delayed by at least a day after injection.

Does the sun influence the effectiveness of botulinum toxin?

The sun does not directly affect botulinum toxin effectiveness once it has begun to work. Gradual elimination of the product is linked to internal enzymatic mechanisms independent of sun exposure.
However, excessive heat exposure immediately after injection could theoretically disrupt product diffusion, hence the importance of following post-injection instructions.
Beyond the immediate post-session period, appropriate sun protection remains recommended, not for botulinum toxin itself, but to preserve skin quality and prevent UV-induced skin ageing.

Can you go in the sun after a botulinum toxin injection?

Sun exposure is possible after a botulinum toxin injection, provided it is reasonable and delayed. It is preferable to wait 24 to 48 hours before prolonged exposure.
Wearing a hat, using broad-spectrum sunscreen and avoiding hours of strong sunlight are simple but effective measures.
It is important to remember that these recommendations relate more to dermatological common sense than a specific risk associated with botulinum toxin.

Aesthetic results and longevity in summer

The duration of botulinum toxin action is not influenced by the season. On average, effects appear between the third and seventh day after injection, with an optimal result around two weeks. Effectiveness generally lasts between five and six months.
Some patients believe sweating or heat reduces treatment longevity. This idea is not scientifically supported. Differences between patients relate to individual factors such as muscle strength, metabolism or individual sensitivity.

Travelling after botulinum toxin injections

Summer often means travel and holidays. Travelling after a botulinum toxin injection is not problematic. It is simply advisable not to schedule a long-haul flight or intense physical activity on the day of injection.
Pressure changes during flights have no impact on the injected product or its effectiveness.
A well-planned appointment easily reconciles aesthetic care and holiday arrangements.

Botulinum toxin injections and excessive sweating in summer

Botulinum toxin is a reference treatment for severe primary axillary hyperhidrosis. By blocking acetylcholine release at the sweat glands, it significantly reduces sweat production for several months.
Summer is often when patients seek consultation for this reason, as social and functional discomfort becomes greater. Performing this treatment before or during summer considerably improves quality of life.
There is no negative interaction between outdoor heat and botulinum toxin effectiveness for this indication.

Summary: botulinum toxin and summer are compatible

Botulinum toxin injections can certainly be performed in summer, provided post-treatment medical instructions are followed. It is a safe, effective procedure adaptable to every season.
As always in aesthetic medicine, the key is an appropriate indication, a well-mastered technique and clear patient information. A personalised consultation determines the most suitable time for treatment and optimises its benefits, whatever the time of year.
