WHAT SHOULD BE AVOIDED BEFORE SCULPTRA ?

Dernière mise à jour : 7 July 2026

Before any Sculptra injection, preparation is a fundamental part of treatment. Dr Romano always emphasises this during the initial consultation. Safety, effectiveness and the quality of the result depend largely on what the patient does — or avoids doing — before the session.
Sculptra, a product based on poly-L-lactic acid, works by gradually stimulating natural collagen production. This characteristic requires a rigorous approach and advance preparation. Unlike other aesthetic injections, preparation must never be neglected. Here is a clear, structured explanation of everything to avoid before Sculptra treatment.

Why is it important to prepare properly for a Sculptra injection ?

Preparation before Sculptra has three main objectives : reducing the risks of side effects, optimising stimulation of collagen synthesis and ensuring even distribution of the product in the tissues.
Poly-L-lactic acid triggers a gradual biological response. Excessive inflammation, vascular fragility or interference from medicines can disrupt this process. Avoiding certain practices before injection therefore helps to influence the quality of the final result.
This preparatory phase is an integral part of treatment.

Which medicines, dietary supplements and substances should you avoid before a Sculptra injection ?

Several substances increase the risk of bleeding and bruising and should, where medically possible, be stopped with the prescribing doctor's agreement.
If your health allows, avoid taking aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (ibuprofen, ketoprofen, naproxen, etc.) in the days before a Sculptra injection, as they increase the risk of bruising and minor bleeding at the injection site.
With medical approval, limit or stop blood-thinning dietary supplements (high-dose omega-3, gingko biloba, ginseng, high-dose vitamin E, certain « circulation » or « memory » supplements) before the session, particularly in patients already taking anticoagulant or antiplatelet treatment.
Do not drink alcohol the day before or on the day of the session, as alcohol promotes vasodilation, bruising and sometimes causes a more pronounced inflammatory response.

Which aesthetic treatments should you avoid before Sculptra treatment ?

The skin should be in as neutral a condition as possible at the time of injection, without irritation or recent damage.
It is advisable to :

  • Avoid peels, laser, radiofrequency or microneedling sessions on the same areas in the days or weeks before a Sculptra injection, to avoid excessively stressing the skin.
  • Stop applying potentially irritating topical products (high-concentration retinoids, exfoliating acids used daily, aggressive mechanical scrubs) immediately before the session, particularly on sensitive skin, to reduce the risk of redness, burning and other side effects.
  • Avoid waxing, vigorous massage, cupping, deep drainage sessions or intensive aesthetic manipulation of the areas to be injected in the days before treatment, to avoid worsening inflammation or bruising.

When should a Sculptra injection be postponed ?

Certain situations require the session to be postponed to avoid stimulating the skin or immune system in unfavourable circumstances.

  • Postpone Sculptra if there is a local infection or inflammation at the injection site : active herpes, a major inflammatory acne flare-up, dermatitis, unhealed wounds, a skin infection or an abscess. Injections must be performed on healthy skin.
  • Delay treatment in the event of fever, a systemic infection, an acute illness or an inflammatory flare-up of a chronic condition.
  • Wait one month after vaccination before having a Sculptra injection.

Why should you disclose your full medical history before Sculptra ?

One of the most important things to avoid before a Sculptra injection is withholding medical information. Any omission can compromise treatment safety.
It is essential to tell the doctor about : autoimmune diseases, immunosuppressive treatments, a history of excessive inflammatory reactions, a tendency towards hypertrophic or keloid scars, previous aesthetic injections, including botulinum toxin.
The initial medical consultation is not a formality. It determines the suitability of the indication and the safety of the procedure.

What precautions should you take before a Sculptra injection ?

Preparation is not limited to medical aspects : it also concerns the patient's expectations and schedule.
It is advisable not to have a Sculptra injection immediately before an important event (a wedding, photo shoot, professional meeting) : allow sufficient time for redness, any bruising and temporary swelling to subside. If you want to enjoy the result for an important event, bear in mind that it takes a few months for the result to become visible.
It is advisable to avoid having several injections in the same areas (hyaluronic acid, botulinum toxin) within a very short period without an overall plan : the risk of inflammation, diffusion or less harmonious results increases when products are layered without a strategy.
It is important not to choose a Sculptra injection without clarifying your expectations : Sculptra is not a filler that produces immediate results, and requests for sudden transformation or excessive correction that do not match its mechanism of action should be avoided.

What should you avoid on the day of a Sculptra injection ?

A few simple adjustments also contribute to the safety and comfort of the session.

  • Do not apply full-coverage make-up, thick foundation or occlusive products to the treatment area on the day of the session, to facilitate disinfection and reduce the risk of infection.
  • Avoid intense sun exposure or sunbed sessions in the days before the session, particularly if your skin is already fragile or has recently been treated using other techniques.
  • Limit smoking as much as possible : smoking impairs microcirculation, slows healing and can affect the quality of the tissue response to a treatment that specifically relies on stimulating collagen synthesis.
