HOW TO CHOOSE AND APPLY YOUR DAY CREAM ?

Dernière mise à jour : 10 June 2026

Day cream is one of the most widely used cosmetic skincare products, but also one of the most misunderstood. Many patients apply it automatically without really knowing why, or whether their chosen product suits their skin. Consultations frequently reveal inappropriate routines, with creams that are too rich, too light or incorrectly used, which do not provide the expected benefits.
Yet choosing and applying day cream correctly is fundamental to preserving skin health, maintaining good hydration, strengthening the skin barrier and preventing premature ageing. This article offers a clear, objective medical approach to understanding how to select a suitable day cream and apply it optimally.

Why and how should you use a day cream?

What does a day cream actually do?

The main function of a day cream is not to transform the skin, but to protect and support it throughout the day. It acts as an interface between the skin and the external environment, limiting transepidermal water loss and supplying certain protective active ingredients.
Unlike night care, day cream must account for daily stressors such as pollution, climatic changes, oxidative stress and ultraviolet radiation. Its role is therefore primarily preventive, although certain formulations also include corrective active ingredients.
A well-chosen day cream improves skin comfort, suppleness and radiance and prepares the skin for make-up or prolonged exposure to the external environment.

How should you choose your day cream?

With so many creams available, making the right choice can be difficult. First, take a moment to observe your skin: its appearance, sensitivity and tendency to shine or feel tight. Knowing your skin's specific needs will guide you towards the ideal cream.
Each skin type has particular requirements. It is important to choose a formula whose texture and active ingredients precisely match the needs of each skin type.

A day cream for my oily skin

Oily skin produces excess sebum, making it shiny and often causing enlarged pores. Contrary to common misconceptions, it needs daily hydration. Without water, the skin produces excessive sebum to protect itself.
Choose a lightweight cream or moisturising gel enriched with mattifying active ingredients such as niacinamide, zinc or purifying plant extracts. These ingredients regulate sebum production and tighten pores.

A day cream for my combination skin

Combination skin has greater sebum production in the central facial area, with drier or normal areas on the cheeks. A suitable day cream must above all respect this balance. Textures should be light, non-comedogenic and quickly absorbed, hydrating without heaviness or excessively stimulating sebum secretion. Formulations containing niacinamide or gentle regulating agents improve skin quality and maintain adequate hydration. The aim is not to mattify at all costs, but to preserve the skin barrier and limit shine.

A day cream for my sensitive skin

Sensitive skin reacts more strongly to external stressors and unsuitable formulations. It often shows redness, tingling or sensations of heat. A day cream for sensitive skin must prioritise tolerance above all. Fragrance-free formulas without potentially irritating agents should be favoured. Soothing, repairing ingredients, such as certain niacinamide derivatives or biomimetic agents, help strengthen the skin barrier and reduce low-grade inflammation.

A day cream for my dry skin

Dry skin is characterised by a lipid deficiency causing tightness, discomfort and sometimes flaking. A suitable day cream must provide both hydration and nourishing elements to restore the hydrolipidic film. Richer formulations are often necessary, provided they are well tolerated. Formulations containing ceramides, essential fatty acids and humectants limit transepidermal water loss and provide lasting improvement in suppleness. For dry skin, regular application is essential to maintain consistent comfort throughout the day.

A day cream for my normal skin prone to dehydration

Normal skin prone to dehydration can be misleading, as it lacks water without showing obvious signs of dryness. It may look dull, less supple and show fine dehydration lines. A suitable day cream should focus on supplying and retaining water without heaviness. Fluid or lightweight textures rich in humectants such as hyaluronic acid are particularly suitable. The aim is to support natural hydration mechanisms and preserve skin balance, particularly during stress, tiredness or climatic changes.

An anti-pollution day cream

Environmental pollution is now recognised as a major factor in premature skin ageing. Fine particles and atmospheric pollutants promote oxidative stress, inflammation and damage to the skin barrier. An anti-pollution day cream aims to protect the skin from these daily stressors. It generally contains antioxidants that neutralise free radicals and film-forming agents that limit pollutant particles sticking to the skin's surface. This type of cream is particularly relevant in urban environments and forms an integral part of skin ageing prevention.

An anti-ageing day cream

The main aim of an anti-ageing day cream is to prevent and slow the mechanisms of skin ageing. It acts on skin quality by improving hydration, strengthening the skin barrier and providing ingredients that combat oxidative stress. Antioxidants, peptides and certain vitamin derivatives are frequently used in these formulations. An anti-ageing day cream does not correct deep wrinkles or volume loss on its own, but is an essential element of a comprehensive strategy that may include, when indicated, aesthetic medicine treatments such as hyaluronic acid or botulinum toxin.

The importance of sun protection in day cream

Sun protection is central to every daytime routine. Ultraviolet radiation is responsible for much premature skin ageing, particularly wrinkles, pigmentation spots and loss of firmness.
Some day creams include a sun filter, which may be sufficient for moderate urban exposure. However, with prolonged or intense exposure, dedicated sun protection remains essential.
A lack of sun protection undermines many anti-ageing efforts. No active ingredient, however effective, can compensate for the harmful effects of repeated, unprotected sun exposure.

How should you apply your day cream to maximise effectiveness?

Applying day cream is simple, but must be done precisely to ensure effectiveness. It should be applied to clean skin, ideally slightly damp, which promotes penetration of hydrating ingredients.
A moderate quantity is generally sufficient; excess does not improve effectiveness and may instead cause discomfort or shine. The cream should be distributed evenly across the whole face, without neglecting the neck and décolletage, often-forgotten areas particularly exposed to skin ageing.
Application should remain gentle. Light pressing motions promote better tolerance and respect any skin fragility.

Common mistakes to avoid with day cream

One of the most common mistakes is changing cream too frequently, often influenced by marketing promises. Skin needs time to adapt to a product and reveal its full benefits.
Another common mistake is using a cream unsuitable for the season or climate. Skin needs change between winter and summer, potentially requiring adjustments to product texture or formulation.
Finally, irregular or careless application significantly compromises effectiveness. Consistency is a decisive element of any effective skincare routine.
