LED PHOTOMODULATION

What is LED photomodulation?

The LED treatment, also known as photomodulation or phototherapy, is based on the use of different wavelengths of visible light to treat various skin problems. Unlike other aesthetic treatments, LED treatment does not generate heat and is not aggressive to the epidermis, making it a gentle method suitable for all skin types.
LED (light emitting diode) treatment is based on stimulating the mitochondria with cold light. The mitochondrion is the cell's energy centre. This photomodulating action activates cell metabolism, increases tissue oxygenation and stimulates skin synthesis.

LED light modulation in Geneva

LED treatment is an increasingly popular technique in aesthetic medicine for improving the appearance and health of the skin in a non-invasive way. Using LED (light-emitting diode) light to stimulate

skin cells, this treatment is recognised for its beneficial effects on cell regeneration, anti-ageing, acne and the reduction of cutaneous inflammation.

How does LED light work on the skin?

The light emitted by the LEDs penetrates the different layers of the skin, stimulating natural biological processes. Each colour of LED light acts at a specific level of the skin and has a specific effect.
- Red light (630 nm): stimulates the production of collagen and elastin, helping to reduce the signs of ageing, in particular fine lines and wrinkles, and improve skin firmness.
- Blue light (415 nm): acts on the bacteria responsible for acne (Propionibacterium acnes) by reducing their proliferation, helping to reduce inflammation and pimples.
- Yellow light (590 nm): promotes blood and lymph circulation, helping to reduce redness and pigmentation spots, while providing a soothing effect for sensitive skin.
- Green light (525 nm): helps to lighten the complexion by reducing the appearance of age spots and pigmentation spots, and improves the evenness of the complexion.

The main benefits of LED treatment

LED treatment has many advantages for the skin. It is non-invasive, painless and requires no recovery time, making it particularly attractive for people wanting visible results without social eviction. The main benefits observed during red light, blue light or yellow light LED sessions are:
- Reducing signs of ageing: by stimulating collagen production, red light LED helps to improve skin firmness and elasticity, reducing wrinkles and fine lines.
- Improving skin texture: photomodulation stimulates cell renewal, skin is smoother and dilated pores are improved.
- Acne reduction: blue light is particularly effective in treating inflammatory acne, reducing the appearance of pimples without aggressing the skin.
- Pigment spot reduction: green and yellow light can help reduce spots linked to the sun, ageing or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
- Soothing sensitive skin: LED treatment is ideal for sensitive skin or skin prone to rosacea, thanks to its anti-inflammatory and soothing effects.

Indications for LED treatment

LED photomodulation is a technique that can be used alone or in conjunction with other aesthetic procedures. All skin types, even the darkest, can be treated.
The treatment can be carried out in both winter and summer, so even on tanned skin.
Large areas can be treated: neck, décolleté, face, hands. It is particularly recommended for the following indications:
- Skin ageing: wrinkles, loss of elasticity, sagging skin.
This method has a photo-rejuvenating action and prevents skin ageing by stimulating fibroblasts (cells that make skin).
- Acne: mild to moderate acne, inflammatory pimples, oily skin.
- Pigmentation spots: sun spots, lentigos, hyperpigmentation.
- Dull and uneven complexion: lack of radiance, rough texture of the skin.
- Sensitive or reactive skin: redness, rosacea, skin inflammation.
- Improvement of skin texture: dilated pores, skin tone and elasticity.
- Improvement of redness.
- Action on pigmentation disorders (uneven skin tone and spots).
- Stimulates hair regrowth (indicated for alopecia).
- Relaxing effect, appearance of a feeling of well-being, improvement in overall fitness.

How an LED treatment session works

An in-office LED treatment session generally lasts between 20 and 30 minutes. Here are the typical stages of a session.

Cleaning the skin: before the session, the skin is carefully cleansed to remove any traces of make-up, impurities or excess sebum.

Positioning under the LED lamp: the patient sits comfortably, usually lying down, under a lamp emitting LED light chosen according to the specific needs of the patient's skin. A safe distance (approximately 20 cm) is maintained between the device and the patient. The eyes are protected by shields.

Exposure to LED light: the face or area to be treated is exposed to LED light for approximately 20 minutes. The treatment is painless and relaxing.

Application of a moisturising cream: after the session, a moisturising cream or specific serum is applied to soothe and moisturise the skin.

Frequency and number of sessions required

The results of LED treatment are progressive and cumulative. In general, it is recommended to follow a protocol of 6 to 10 sessions spaced one week apart to obtain optimal results. Thereafter, maintenance sessions every month or two may be considered to maintain the benefits.

LED treatment as a complement to other beauty treatments

LED treatment can be used on its own for a burst of radiance or integrated into a more comprehensive skincare protocol. It is frequently combined with other aesthetic treatments to maximise the effects.
- After a chemical peel: LED treatment soothes the skin and accelerates healing after a peel.
- After a microneedling session: LED light stimulates skin regeneration and optimises the results of microneedling by activating collagen production.
- As a complement to mesotherapy: mesotherapy provides nutrients and deep hydration, while LED light improves the quality of the skin barrier.

Advantages of LED treatment over other aesthetic treatments

LED treatment has many advantages over other more invasive aesthetic techniques such as ablative laser, radiofrequency or chemical peelings.
- No social eviction: LED treatment causes no peeling, redness or pain, allowing you to resume your daily activities immediately after the session.<Suitable for all skin types: unlike some lasers or peels, LED treatment is suitable for both light and dark skin, and even sensitive, reactive or tanned skin.
- A natural, non-invasive method: LED light works by stimulating the skin's own regeneration mechanisms without the use of chemicals or heat.

Contraindications to LED treatment

LED treatment is generally very well tolerated, but there are some contraindications. It is not recommended in cases of:
- Photosensitivity.
- Epilepsy: LED light could trigger seizures in epileptic patients.
- Pregnancy: although the risks are low, it is generally recommended not to carry out LED sessions during pregnancy as a precautionary measure.

LED treatment results

Dr Romano considers that the results are variable and slight, but visible, and patients are satisfied. The effects of LED treatment on the skin can be seen as early as the first session, with brighter, soothed skin. However, the most significant improvements appear after several sessions. Here's what you can expect to see after a full protocol:
- Firmer skin and fewer wrinkles.
- Radiant, even complexion.
- Reduction in acne and blemishes.
- Reduction in redness and inflammation.
- Hair regrowth.
