What is the most beautiful lip shape ?

The lips, a subtle embodiment of elegance and attractiveness, play a central role in facial harmony. For centuries, they have captivated the collective imagination and remain a true symbol of seduction. But what makes a pair of lips “perfect” in the eyes of science ? Lip beauty criteria

Beautiful lips are pleasant to look at, sensual and feminine. Having full lips is often considered the ideal. However, lips of normal size can also be very aesthetic, provided they meet certain beauty criteria :
• The volume of the upper lip is two thirds of the volume of the lower lip.
• The projection of the upper lip exceeds that of the lower lip by a few millimeters.
• The white lip is concave, the red lip is convex.
• The Cupid’s bow is well defined and the philtral columns are well marked.
• The angle formed between the nose and the lips is 90°-95° in men and 110°-120° in women.
• The peak of the Cupid’s bow passes through the center of the nostrils.
• The width of the lips should be equal to the distance between the two pupils.

What are plump lips ?

The Merz laboratory developed a lip volumetry scale that objectively defines lip size. Five stages have been identified :
• Stage 0 : very thin lips.
• Stage 1 : thin lips.
• Stage 2 : moderately full lips.
• Stage 3 : full lips.
• Stage 4 : plump lips.

Ideal proportions according to science

What are the ideal proportions for lips considered attractive ? A study conducted by the research unit of the University of California, published in February 2017 in the American scientific journal JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery, attempted to answer this question.
Nearly 400 volunteers participated in the survey. They reviewed several photographs of young women's lips and rated each on a scale of 1 to 10, from least to most attractive.
The result ? Participants, both men and women, clearly preferred lips that were 50 % fuller than average. They also favored a ratio where the lower lip is twice the thickness of the upper lip. This ratio recalls the natural and harmonious lips of celebrities such as Alessandra Ambrosio or Miranda Kerr, often considered examples of perfection.
However, the study highlights an essential point : natural appearance is key. Plump and well-balanced lips are the most appealing. This research confirms that it is possible to enhance the lips while preserving a natural look through appropriate aesthetic treatments.

The different types of lips

Depending on lip size and curvature, the shape of the Cupid’s bow, and the junction between the upper and lower lips, five lip shapes can be distinguished.

The lips are narrow and have little volume, with a regular outline. The lower lip has more volume than the upper lip.

Wide and elongated in appearance, these lips are thin and long-shaped, with the volume of the lower lip exceeding that of the upper lip.

Celebrity lip shapes

Celebrity lips have always fascinated and inspired. A symbol of charm and elegance, they often reflect aesthetic trends that mark different eras. Whether full, well-defined or subtly enhanced, these iconic lips embody an ideal of beauty for many people.
• The Cupid style : this shape highlights the upper lip, with particular emphasis on the Cupid’s bow. By slightly lifting the outer portions, it gives a youthful and refined appearance. Ideal for patients seeking a lifted, delicate and natural effect.
• The Hollywood style : inspired by movie stars, this emblematic shape enhances the three distinct curves of the upper lip. The corners of the mouth are slightly rounded, creating a harmonious balance with a moderately enhanced lower lip. The result is near-perfect symmetry and a touch of timeless glamour.
• The Classic style : universal and discreet, this shape suits all morphologies. It enhances the natural “S” of the lips, with a balanced ratio between the upper and lower lips. The Classic style is perfect for patients seeking subtle and natural enhancement.
• The Pearl style : characterized by a full lower lip, this shape is distinguished by a slight central cleft, creating an elegant “pearl” effect on each side. It highlights sensuality and the natural radiance of the lips, for a result that is both charming and sophisticated.
• The Supermodel style : appreciated for its striking effect, this style emphasizes the lower lip. By adding volume to the vermilion and redefining the contours, it delivers an instant glamorous effect. Ideal for patients who desire a bold yet harmonious result.
• The Goddess style : the “Goddess Lips” style is characterized by full, projected lips, where the five components of the lips are harmoniously accentuated. This approach particularly enhances volume for an elegant and glamorous result. This type of lips is ideal for patients with sufficient distance between the nose and the chin, allowing for a balanced and harmonious outcome. Inspired by stars and iconic beauty figures, this style reflects sophistication and modernity.

Price for lip harmonisation according to beauty standards

The approach aimed at respecting the aesthetic canons of the lips is based on a subtle balance, achieved using a syringe of hyaluronic acid at a price of 650 CHF. This cost includes the entire procedure : prior consultation, selection of the appropriate product, injection according to precise proportions, and post-procedure follow-up. It reflects a tailor-made approach, carried out within a rigorous medical framework, in line with aesthetic expectations defined by universal references.

What are the ideal proportions between the upper lip and the lower lip ?

The ideal lip proportions generally follow the golden ratio of 1:1.6, where the lower lip is slightly fuller than the upper lip. This natural harmony creates an aesthetic balance of the face. However, the proportions may be adjusted according to facial morphology and patient preferences.

The Cupid’s bow defines the contour of the upper lip, giving it elegance and sensuality. A well-defined bow gives character and definition to the lips. In medicine, the management of this area makes it possible to enhance the smile and to achieve a natural and refined result.

Naturally full, well-defined, and symmetrical lips are the most sought after. The current trend favors moderate volume, a slightly fuller lower lip, and a well-defined Cupid’s bow. The goal is to maintain facial harmony for an elegant and natural result.

Over time, the lips lose hydration and volume, which accentuates wrinkles and gives a tired appearance. Plump and well-hydrated lips convey a youthful and vibrant look, as they reflect healthy skin and a fresh-looking face.

Well-defined contours, a marked Cupid’s bow, slightly lifted corners of the mouth and a smooth texture are elements of sensuality. A slightly more voluminous lower lip and good hydration also enhance the sensual and attractive appearance of the lips.
