Glossary of aesthetic medicine

A

ABRASION :

This technique involves the controlled and precise removal of the superficial layer of skin tissue. This method is used to treat various dermatological and aesthetic problems, such as skin lesions, scars and wrinkles.

HYALURONIC ACID :

Hyaluronic acid is a polysaccharide naturally present in the dermis, the cutaneous layer that ensures the skin's hydration and elasticity. This molecule has an extraordinary capacity to retain water, making it essential for skin hydration and thickness. Its structure enables it to capture and hold considerable volumes of water in relation to its own mass, helping to preserve the skin's youthful appearance and prevent wrinkles and the signs of ageing.

ACNÉ :

Acne is an inflammatory skin condition that mainly affects the hair follicles. The condition is the result of an inflammatory reaction triggered when the secretion of sebum - an oily substance produced by the sebaceous glands - becomes excessive and becomes blocked in the follicles. This excess sebum, combined with the accumulation of dead cells and keratin, causes the sebaceous glands to become blocked, leading to the formation of lesions known as comedones.

ADIPOCYTE :

An adipocyte is a fat cell, a living biological element with its own metabolism, responsible for the formation of body fat reserves. When a person gains weight, adipocytes increase in volume by accumulating more lipids, but without dividing or multiplying excessively. In other words, the increase in weight is mainly the result of hypertrophy (increase in size) of fat cells, rather than hyperplasia (increase in number) of adipocytes.

ADIPOSITY :

Adiposity refers to excess body fat or an abnormal accumulation of lipids in tissues. This localised fat can be treated by cryolipolysis or liposuction.

ALOPECIA :

Alopecia is a scalp condition characterised by partial or total hair loss. This condition can be caused by various factors, such as hormonal disorders, autoimmune conditions, stress or genetic abnormalities.

B

JEWELRY :

The area of fat immediately below the chin and along the base of the neck. The accumulation of fat in this area can be due to a variety of factors, including excess weight, ageing and genetics.

BEAUTY :

Beauty is the attribute of that which provokes a feeling of admiration and sensory pleasure linked to aesthetics. It is manifested by a quality that captures attention, arouses positive emotion and inspires a desire for contemplation.
