Behind appealing terminology borrowed from the world of make-up lie heterogeneous, poorly defined practices, often inadequately explained to patients, whose actual benefits remain highly controversial medically.<\/p>\n

What is vaginal contouring?<\/h2>\n

The term vaginal contouring does not belong to any recognised medical classification. It appears neither in professional society guidelines nor in authoritative scientific publications in gynaecology or aesthetic medicine.
<\/strong>It is a marketing term inspired by facial contouring, vaguely describing a range of procedures purportedly intended to \u201creshape\u201d, \u201cbeautify\u201d or \u201charmonise\u201d the appearance of the vulva and female intimate area. This lack of a precise definition is itself a first major problem, creating confusion between different techniques, indications and anatomical areas.
The label vaginal contouring may encompass very diverse practices, such as hyaluronic acid injections into the labia majora, attempts to visually alter the labia minora, or even procedures offered without genuine medical justification. This imprecision opens the door to unrealistic promises and expectations often disconnected from anatomical reality.<\/p>\n

Anatomy of the female intimate area<\/h2>\n

The female intimate area has a complex anatomy that varies between women and is entirely physiological in its diversity. The vulva includes, in particular, the labia majora, labia minora, clitoris, vaginal vestibule and surrounding tissues.
There is no universal aesthetic standard for the vulva. Variations in size, shape, symmetry and pigmentation are normal and do not indicate any abnormality. Yet the circulation of standardised, retouched images contributes to unjustified insecurities in some patients.

ACOG also emphasises that surgery on the labia minora without a medical indication in minors is considered contrary to US federal law, illustrating the seriousness of the ethical issues and the proximity of these procedures to certain forms of genital mutilation. Other work in medical ethics urges great caution regarding these procedures, particularly because of the lack of long-term controlled trials, commercial pressure and the difficulty of ensuring truly free and informed consent in the social media age.<\/p>\n

What are the risks of aesthetic genital procedures?<\/h2>\n

Every medical intervention, whether injectable, instrumental or surgical, carries risks. The female intimate area is no exception. It has an abundant blood supply, dense innervation and essential mechanical and sensory functions. Any alteration of this area must therefore be considered with extreme caution.

An inappropriate indication can lead to disappointment, persistent pain or no genuine functional improvement.
Surgical vaginoplasty is an invasive, irreversible procedure that permanently alters vaginal anatomy. It should only be considered in well-defined situations, with a clear medical indication, following thorough assessment. Risks include surgical complications, sensory disturbances, chronic pain, internal scarring or impaired sexual function. When offered to address an unfounded aesthetic request, the benefit\u2013risk balance becomes particularly unfavourable.
Labiaplasty, or reduction of the labia minora, may in some cases address genuine functional discomfort, such as painful friction or difficulties during certain activities. However, when motivated solely by aesthetic considerations influenced by unrealistic standards, it carries significant risks: healing problems, prolonged pain, loss of sensation and altered body image. Here too, a rigorous indication and responsible medical support are essential.
These physical risks are accompanied by a significant psychological risk. Altering an intimate area according to vague or socially imposed aesthetic criteria can reinforce body dissatisfaction, affect one's relationship with intimacy and create dependence on repeated corrections.
Together, these practices remind us that intimate aesthetic medicine cannot be reduced to a trend. Every procedure must be guided by a sound medical indication, honest information and thorough ethical reflection, to preserve not only physical integrity but also patients' psychological balance and quality of life.<\/p>\n

The essential ethical framework in aesthetic medicine<\/h2>\n

Aesthetic medicine is based on trust between doctor and patient, requiring clear, honest and understandable information and absolute respect for physical and psychological integrity.
Offering vaginal contouring without a sound medical indication raises several ethical questions. Is the expected benefit real and measurable? Are the risks proportionate? Is the request freely made or influenced by external pressures?
In Geneva, where medical practice is particularly closely regulated, these questions must be central to every treatment decision.<\/p>\n

Why is the term vaginal contouring problematic?<\/h2>\n

By using vocabulary from make-up and marketing, vaginal contouring trivialises a medical procedure and obscures its complexity. It reduces an intimate area, laden with personal history and symbolism, to a mere aesthetic object.
