The skin is much more than a simple covering for our bodies. It is a living, active organ essential for survival. It protects us from external aggressors, regulates body temperature, contributes to the immune system and reflects both our age and general health. Yet, like all tissue, skin is vulnerable. It becomes more fragile over time, heals more slowly in older people and often retains marks of trauma or surgery.
In this context, American researchers recently highlighted the promising effects of a compound called ABT-263, belonging to the senolytic class of molecules. This experimental treatment could accelerate skin healing and promote more complete regeneration, particularly in older individuals. Targeting senescent cells to restore skin vitality opens a new era for regenerative and aesthetic medicine.<\/p>\n

Wound healing<\/h2>\n

Wound healing is a complex, orderly process involving several successive stages. First, the body triggers an immediate inflammatory response to clean the wound and prevent infection. Next, fibroblasts multiply, produce collagen and help form richly vascularised granulation tissue. Finally, a remodelling phase gradually reorganises fibres and strengthens the scar.
In young adults, this process is generally quick and effective. With age, however, healing slows, becomes imperfect and often leaves visible after-effects. The main reason is the gradual accumulation of senescent cells: aged cells that no longer divide but continue emitting inflammatory signals harmful to tissue balance. These cells alter the skin microenvironment and hinder regeneration.
Cellular senescence is a natural protective mechanism against uncontrolled proliferation. When a cell has experienced excessive stress or DNA damage, it becomes senescent and stops dividing. This helps prevent cancerous transformation. However, with age, these cells accumulate in tissues and become harmful.
In the skin, their excessive presence promotes chronic inflammation, reduces collagen production, impairs fibroblast function and slows healing. This partly explains why older people take longer to heal after injury and often develop more visible scars.<\/p>\n

ABT-263: an innovative senolytic<\/h2>\n

ABT-263, also known as navitoclax, is a molecule initially developed in oncology research. It belongs to the senolytic family: compounds capable of selectively eliminating senescent cells. Unlike conventional therapies seeking to stimulate overall regeneration, senolytics directly target the source of the problem: ageing tissue cells.
American researchers showed that ABT-263 administered to aged animal models significantly accelerated skin healing. By eliminating senescent cells in the skin, the molecule allows young, functional cells to develop, improves collagen production and restores an environment favourable to regeneration.<\/p>\n
