Yet several recent scientific studies suggest that people who had acne when young have skin better preserved against ageing in the long term. Researchers identified a specific biological mechanism: cells in people with acne-prone skin appear to have longer telomeres, markers of greater cellular longevity. It mainly affects teenagers and young adults, with more persistent forms in some adult women. Although often experienced as an aesthetic handicap, acne is more than an aesthetic problem: it reflects increased sebaceous gland activity and a particular skin response to hormonal and inflammatory stimuli.
Long considered a disadvantage, this excessive sebum production could paradoxically provide long-term protection. Producing more sebum gives acne-prone skin a denser lipid layer, acting as a barrier against external aggressors, free radicals and dehydration. This strengthened hydrolipidic film could delay the laxity and dryness typical of ageing.

The role of telomeres in cellular ageing

Skin ageing is not solely linked to environment or lifestyle. It primarily results from an internal biological phenomenon: cellular senescence. Each cell's genetic material is protected by structures called telomeres at chromosome ends. With every cell division, telomeres shorten slightly. When too short, the cell loses its ability to divide and enters an ageing phase.
Long telomeres therefore mark cellular youthfulness. The British study published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology compared telomere length in women who had experienced acne with women who had never had it. The former had significantly longer telomeres, suggesting slower cellular ageing. This could explain why formerly acne-prone skin shows fewer wrinkles and retains firmness longer.

A clinical observation confirmed by dermatologists

For years, dermatologists had noticed that patients with acne-prone skin tended to age differently. Fine lines appear later, skin maintains thickness and tone longer, and sagging is often less pronounced. The telomere study provides a biological explanation for this empirical observation.
Longer telomeres in acne-prone skin cells could reflect specific activity of genes involved in cell cycle regulation and tissue repair. Moderate chronic inflammation in acne may also cause a particular cellular adaptation, increasing dermal and epidermal resistance to oxidative stress.

The protective mechanisms of acne-prone skin

Beyond telomere length, other biological factors appear to contribute to acne-prone skin's greater resistance to ageing. A main factor is increased sebum production, rich in protective lipids. Sebum acts as a natural shield against external aggressors, maintaining stable hydration and protecting skin against oxidation associated with ultraviolet rays and pollution.
Sebum also contains vitamin E and essential fatty acids with antioxidant properties. These help neutralise free radicals, the main agents of collagen and elastin degradation. Skin better protected against oxidative stress retains structure and elasticity longer.
Acne-prone skin also often has greater cell renewal activity. This supports tissue regeneration and maintenance of epidermal thickness. The denser dermis better resists time's effects, while the epidermis maintains finer, more even texture.

The acne paradox

Living with severe acne can be difficult, particularly psychologically. In the long term, however, this temporary imbalance could prove beneficial. Excess sebum, often perceived as an enemy, actually plays an essential protective role. Over time, excessive production decreases, but skin retains a biological memory of its initial functioning.
This does not mean idealising acne. Scars, pigmentation disorders or persistent imbalances require specific medical care. Nevertheless, people who experienced moderate acne have a biological advantage: although oilier in youth, their skin ages more slowly and retains a plumper, more even appearance in adulthood.

Skin ageing: multiple mechanisms

Skin ageing results from combined internal and external factors. Age, oxidative stress, sun exposure, pollution, smoking, lack of sleep and diet all play decisive roles. Over time, skin cells lose their capacity to renew, collagen and elastin production decreases, and skin becomes thinner and duller.
In people who had acne, increased telomere length could delay this process by prolonging cell lifespan. Their skin often has higher collagen levels and better dermal density. This does not mean complete protection, but ageing is more gradual and less marked.

Acne and implications for aesthetic medicine

Understanding these mechanisms opens interesting prospects for aesthetic medicine. If certain biological characteristics of acne-prone skin promote resistance to ageing, they could inspire preventative treatments.
Cell stimulation techniques such as PRP injections or collagen stimulator treatments specifically aim to restart natural regeneration. Likewise, some topical active ingredients seek to preserve telomere length or protect cells against premature shortening.
In clinical practice, formerly acne-prone skin nevertheless requires a personalised approach. Although ageing more slowly, it remains prone to quality irregularities, variable sebum production and scarring risks. Aesthetic care therefore aims to preserve balance while supporting its natural evolution.

The importance of prevention and a healthy lifestyle

Although genetics gives acne-prone skin certain advantages, environmental factors are decisive. Sun, pollution, smoking and stress accelerate collagen degradation and encourage wrinkles regardless of skin type. An appropriate lifestyle remains essential: balanced nutrition, daily sun protection, regular hydration and suitable dermatological care.
Aesthetic medicine now offers gentle, effective solutions to support natural skin ageing. Light peels, hyaluronic acid injections, botulinum toxin or biorevitalisation techniques maintain skin quality while respecting its identity.

A discovery changing our perception of ageing

The acne-prone skin study challenges some assumptions. It shows that skin ageing reflects deep biological characteristics as well as exposure and care. Telomere length could eventually become an indicator of cellular youthfulness usable in preventative dermatology.
This discovery also highlights the importance of understanding intricate dermal and epidermal mechanisms to adapt therapeutic strategies. Drawing on these data, aesthetic medicine increasingly favours regeneration and natural stimulation over simple correction.

Conclusion: do people with acne age less?

Often stigmatised for irregular appearance and imperfections, acne-prone skin actually holds remarkable longevity potential. Its cells seem better equipped against oxidative stress and telomere shortening, two major skin ageing factors.
Far from a mere scientific curiosity, this discovery changes our understanding of inflammation, regeneration and ageing. It also illustrates skin function's complexity: skin that experienced excessive activity at one time may paradoxically derive lasting benefit.
For patients, this knowledge offers reassurance: skin affected by acne can age more slowly and retain natural radiance longer. For doctors, it opens the way to better personalised care and more precise preventative strategies respecting each skin type's physiology.

               <img loading="lazy"
