Once associated with superficiality or vanity, it is now a personal, often considered approach to harmonising appearance and wellbeing. Botulinum toxin and hyaluronic acid injections, nose correction and lip injections are no longer marginal practices. Yet despite becoming commonplace, many people still conceal their use of these treatments. The taboo persists, perhaps more discreetly, but still perceptibly.
Evolving social perceptions of beauty and self-care reflect changes in our societies: freer and more connected, but also more exposed to others' scrutiny. The question is therefore no longer simply whether aesthetic procedures are common – they are – but whether they are fully acknowledged.

Book an appointment

    Contents

The gradual normalisation of aesthetic procedures

In the early 2000s, aesthetic medicine was still perceived as reserved for an elite or certain celebrities. Female patients rarely discussed procedures for fear of judgement. Fifteen years later, data show profound change. According to an ELLE magazine survey, nearly half of respondents had undergone an aesthetic procedure, whether injections, peels, laser treatment or surgery.
This reflects wider access to techniques, increased safety and the quality of results. Treatments have become more precise and less invasive, with more natural results. Recovery times have shortened, scarring is minimal and approaches are personalised.
Aesthetic medical procedures gently support ageing. They preserve facial vitality and harmony over time. Used precisely and moderately, botulinum toxin relaxes certain expression lines without freezing or changing expressions. Hyaluronic acid restores lost volume while respecting natural facial structure.

A more open relationship, but not always openly acknowledged

The survey reveals a nuanced reality: although women discuss treatments more, they remain selective about whom they tell. Some speak freely with loved ones; others remain silent. Several factors explain this: fear of judgement, fear of appearing "artificial", or a wish to preserve some mystery around their appearance.
The taboo has therefore shifted from the procedure itself to disclosing it. In an image-centred world, naturalness remains a dominant value. Many wish to look "rested", "healthy" or "radiant" without the source of change being identifiable. This discretion forms part of a new beauty philosophy: carefully maintained naturalness.
Women, and increasingly men, accept the inner motivation behind their choice but often prefer imperceptible results. Frozen faces and excess belong to the past. Today, subtlety and coherence take precedence over transformation.

The influence of media and social networks

Social media has profoundly changed attitudes towards images. Filters, retouched photographs and widely circulated aesthetic standards create constant visual pressure. This continuous exposure fuels both the desire for improvement and the need for authenticity.
Aesthetic medical procedures operate within this tension: maintaining a fresh, confident appearance while remaining oneself. Yet social networks also sustain unrealistic expectations. Users admire "perfect" results while sometimes criticising a lack of naturalness. This ambivalence creates a double discourse: practice is accepted, but admitting it remains delicate.
Some public figures, however, have helped normalise discussion. Celebrities now openly mention injections or procedures, emphasising their considered, measured approach. This growing transparency normalises aesthetic medicine, placing it within self-care rather than superficial transformation.

The psychological dimension of aesthetic procedures

Choosing an aesthetic procedure is not trivial. It answers a personal need, often linked to self-confidence, the image one wants to project or alignment with inner feelings. For many patients, the aim is to restore harmony between perception and presentation rather than change their face.
Motivations vary: addressing a longstanding insecurity, reducing fatigue signs or simply preventing ageing. When supported by an experienced, attentive doctor, these approaches contribute to overall wellbeing. The doctor assesses the request, analyses its coherence and guides the patient towards a natural, balanced result.
The doctor also helps relieve guilt about these treatments. Aesthetic medicine is adaptation rather than escape from time. It acts on objective parameters – tone, volume and skin quality – without denying age's reality.

The weight of social judgement

Despite changing attitudes, others' perceptions remain decisive in how beauty and ageing are viewed. Some still fear their approach will be interpreted as vanity or weakness. This often implicit judgement sustains the taboo.
Attitudes towards ageing are also cultural. Some societies value time's marks as signs of a full life; others perceive them as flaws to correct. Switzerland, particularly major cities such as Geneva, occupies an intermediate position: naturalness comes first, but aesthetic maintenance is widespread.
This paradox explains why many patients proceed while wanting it to remain unnoticed. They seek discreet improvement, a subtle balance between authenticity and perfection.

From concealment to transparency: a generational change

Younger generations approach aesthetic medicine more spontaneously. They see these procedures more as maintenance routines than exceptional transformation. Facials, light injections and preventative treatments fit within a broader wellbeing approach.
This development reflects greater information availability, visible results and diverse offerings. Treatments are accessible, adjustable and safe when performed by experienced doctors. This trust in medicine helps lift the taboo.
However, normalisation must accompany increased vigilance. Social media sometimes presents a simplified view of procedures, obscuring their medical dimension. Doctors therefore play an essential role in explaining that every aesthetic procedure, however minor, relies on medical expertise, detailed anatomical knowledge and moderation.

The importance of medical and ethical communication

Social acceptance of aesthetic procedures depends largely on how they are presented. Explained clearly, placed in medical context and performed ethically, they lose their taboo character.
The doctor must be a guide rather than a seller of illusions. They help patients understand each treatment's possibilities, limitations and benefits. Communication must remain transparent and personalised, respecting every face's individuality.
This responsible approach restores aesthetic medicine's true dimension as care rather than concealment. It thus joins other medical disciplines in primarily preserving health and quality of life.

Towards comfortable acceptance of medical aesthetics

Today, the boundary between care and aesthetics is fading. Injectables, skin rejuvenation technologies, peels and lasers fit within prevention and maintenance. Aesthetic medicine accompanies and supports naturalness rather than replacing it.
Increasing numbers of patients acknowledge their approach as a considered choice without shame. They seek to feel better in their skin rather than transform themselves. This calm approach reflects a profound shift towards a society prioritising harmony over appearances.
The taboo has not disappeared but changed in nature. It feeds on fear of judgement rather than fear of the procedure. Learning to view aesthetic medicine as an extension of care rather than a transgression makes it possible to end this silence.

Conclusion: are aesthetic procedures still as taboo?

Attitudes towards aesthetic procedures reflect our evolving relationship with ourselves. Once secret, now acknowledged but discreet, they illustrate the tension between individual freedom and collective judgement. Everyone is free to choose how to age, at what pace and by which means.
What matters is understanding rather than concealing or proclaiming. Understanding that beauty is not absolute, but a balance between identity, wellbeing and authenticity.
Practised appropriately, aesthetic medicine becomes a tool for harmony: maintaining appearance while respecting personal history. If the taboo persists, it probably touches on intimacy, at the boundary between the visible and personal. As discussion becomes freer, that boundary softens. Aesthetic care is no longer hidden: it is simply acknowledged as a natural part of modern body and mind.

Article written by Dr Romano Valeria

LinkedIn

dr.romano.valeria@gmail.com

+41 78 209 02 89

Aesthetic procedures and taboo : an analysis of the evolution of social perception, the normalization of non-invasive treatments and patient motivations, with a focus on trends observed in aesthetic medicine in Geneva.

[1

post-45330","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uncategorized

Acte esthétique, est-ce toujours aussi tabou ?
