Can it accelerate skin ageing ? This concern is understandable. The word « laser » immediately suggests heat, energy or even some form of tissue injury.
Laser technologies are specifically designed to stimulate collagen synthesis in a controlled way, support repair mechanisms, improve skin quality and achieve deep skin rejuvenation.
As a doctor in Geneva, it is essential to provide an answer based on rigorous scientific evidence. Used for appropriate indications, with precise settings and adequate technical expertise, laser treatment does not accelerate skin ageing. On the contrary, certain technologies are recognised for stimulating collagen synthesis and durably improving dermal structure.
To understand these effects, we need to examine how lasers work, how they interact with the different components of the skin and the biological mechanisms involved in skin ageing.

Book an appointment

    Contents

How lasers work in aesthetic medicine

Laser light is coherent, monochromatic and concentrated. Each laser emits a specific wavelength targeting a particular skin structure known as a chromophore : melanin, haemoglobin or water.
Several main categories are used in aesthetic dermatology : vascular lasers (targeting redness and blood vessels), pigment lasers (targeting pigmentation marks), ablative lasers (CO₂, Erbium), non-ablative fractional lasers and hair removal lasers.
The fundamental principle is selective photothermolysis : light energy is absorbed by the target without destroying surrounding tissues when the settings are properly adjusted.
The heat generated triggers a controlled biological response : temporary inflammation followed by a phase of tissue repair and regeneration.

Causes of skin ageing

To answer the question « does laser treatment age the skin ? », we first need to understand skin ageing. It involves two main mechanisms : intrinsic ageing and extrinsic ageing.
Intrinsic ageing, linked to time and genetics, involves a gradual reduction in collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid.
Extrinsic ageing is linked to environmental stressors :UV radiation, pollution, smoking and oxidative stress.
Skin ageing is characterised by reduced dermal density, decreased elasticity, changes in skin quality, the appearance of wrinkles and uneven pigmentation
Ageing is primarily linked to UV radiation and chronic oxidative stress, rather than controlled medical treatments.

Does laser treatment stimulate or destroy collagen ?

The distinction between stimulating and destroying collagen is central.
Fractional lasers, whether ablative or non-ablative, create microscopic zones of controlled thermal stimulation within skin tissue. These micro-injuries trigger a biological repair process called neocollagenesis.
Neocollagenesis is the synthesis of new collagen by fibroblasts. Histological studies have demonstrated a measurable increase in type I and type III collagen synthesis after fractional laser treatment.
When used for skin rejuvenation, laser treatment therefore stimulates collagen production rather than exhausting it.
However, excessive use, unsuitable settings or sessions scheduled too close together can induce chronic inflammation that may impair dermal quality. This reflects an inappropriate indication or inadequate technical expertise rather than the technology itself.

Can laser treatment thin the skin ?

The idea that laser treatment could thin the skin enough to weaken it is based on an inaccurate understanding of the biological mechanisms involved.
Ablative lasers remove a controlled portion of the epidermis. This action is deliberate and controlled. The epidermis regenerates completely within a few days thanks to the proliferative capacity of keratinocytes. At the same time, the dermis begins a gradual process of tissue reconstruction.
After healing, increased dermal thickness is frequently observed, linked to stimulated collagen synthesis and matrix remodelling. Skin imaging studies have demonstrated measurable dermal thickening several months after fractional laser treatment.
However, excessively aggressive protocols or repeated treatment without a genuine indication can temporarily impair the skin barrier. This highlights the need for a prior medical assessment, treatment by an experienced doctor and a personalised therapeutic protocol.

The real risks of laser treatment

Laser treatment does not inherently age the skin. However, it carries potential risks when used incorrectly : post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, hypopigmentation, scarring, prolonged erythema and increased skin sensitivity.
These complications mainly occur in darker phototypes when treatment is performed by an inexperienced doctor and the skin has not been prepared, following sun exposure after treatment, with unsuitable settings or when treatment is performed by someone who is not a doctor
In a rigorous medical setting, laser-induced « premature ageing » has not been scientifically demonstrated.

The role of controlled inflammation after a laser session

Every effective aesthetic procedure relies on a simple biological principle : controlled inflammation induces repair that improves skin quality.
This mechanism is comparable to that observed with chemical peels and collagen-stimulator injections.
Brief, controlled acute inflammation stimulates fibroblasts. By contrast, chronic, repeated inflammation accelerates ageing.
A properly conducted protocol allows sufficient time between sessions to avoid an excessive inflammatory response.

Laser treatment and sun exposure

Confusion between laser treatment and ageing sometimes stems from another factor : the sun.
After laser treatment, the skin is temporarily more sensitive to UV radiation. Unprotected exposure can cause uneven pigmentation or increase oxidative stress.
It is not the laser that ages the skin, but the absence of sun protection after treatment.
Applying sun protection for several weeks after the laser session is essential.

Comparison with other aesthetic treatments

It is useful to compare laser treatment with other aesthetic medical procedures.
Botulinum toxin injections act on muscles and have no direct effect on dermal quality.
Hyaluronic acid injections restore volume but stimulate collagen synthesis only moderately.
Tissue stimulators promote neocollagenesis.
Medium-depth peels also stimulate dermal synthesis.
Fractional ablative laser treatment is among the best-documented techniques for improving skin quality and dermal density.
Within a comprehensive rejuvenation strategy, it complements rather than competes with other treatments.

At what age can you have laser treatment ?

There is no strictly defined age for starting laser treatment. The indication depends primarily on skin condition, the clinical concern and therapeutic goals.
In young adults, laser treatment may be indicated for active acne, scars or unwanted hair.
From 30 to 35 years of age, certain technologies may be used preventively to stimulate collagen production and slow the appearance of early signs of skin ageing.
In more mature patients, laser treatment can correct established changes such as uneven pigmentation, texture irregularities or moderate skin laxity.
The idea that treatment started early would accelerate skin ageing is not supported by scientific evidence. However, repeated procedures without a rigorous medical indication offer no benefit and should be avoided

Does laser treatment exhaust fibroblasts ?

The possibility of laser-related fibroblast « exhaustion » is regularly discussed.
Fibroblasts are dermal cells responsible for synthesising collagen and other extracellular matrix components. Some unvalidated hypotheses suggest that repeated stimulation could lead to cellular fatigue or exhaustion.
Current scientific evidence does not show fibroblast impairment or exhaustion when treatments follow standard protocols with appropriate intervals between sessions.
The recognised factors responsible for a gradual decline in fibroblast activity are mainly : chronic exposure to ultraviolet radiation, smoking, oxidative stress and uncontrolled chronic inflammation.
Used in a rigorous medical setting with appropriate settings, a laser provides a brief, controlled stimulus intended to activate physiological repair mechanisms rather than repeated injury that could impair cellular function.

Ablative vs non-ablative laser : impact on ageing

Ablative lasers, such as CO₂ or Erbium lasers, act more intensely. They produce controlled ablation of part of the epidermis and induce deep dermal remodelling. This requires a temporary recovery period during which redness, crusting or swelling may occur. In return, the clinical improvement achieved in a single session is generally more pronounced.
Non-ablative lasers, by contrast, do not visibly destroy the skin. Their action is more gradual and relies on thermal stimulation of the dermis without damaging the skin surface. Several sessions are needed, after-effects are mild and activities can be resumed quickly.
Neither technology is associated with accelerated skin ageing when correctly used with appropriate indications and settings.
The choice between an ablative and a non-ablative laser depends on skin phototype, the severity of ageing signs, acceptable recovery time and the patient's expectations.

The real danger of laser treatment : non-medical providers

The risk of indirect premature ageing comes from use outside a medical setting rather than from the technology.
Unsuitable settings can cause burns, alter pigmentation or leave scars.
These complications can give the skin an uneven and prematurely damaged appearance.
This underlines the importance of a prior medical consultation, precise diagnosis and appropriate indication.

Conclusion : does laser treatment age the skin ?

The scientific answer is clear : no, laser treatment does not age the skin when used correctly.
On the contrary, numerous studies show that it stimulates collagen production, improves skin quality and contributes to rejuvenation.
A laser is a medical tool. Like any tool, its effectiveness and safety depend on the doctor's expertise and the indication.
In aesthetic medicine, the aim is not to damage the skin but to stimulate it intelligently and controllably while respecting its biology.
Used with sound judgement, laser treatment does not weaken the skin. It contributes to its regeneration.

Article written by Dr Romano Valeria

LinkedIn

dr.romano.valeria@gmail.com

+41 78 209 02 89

["post-61409","infographie","type-infographie","status-publish","hentry

Est-ce que le laser vieillit la peau ? – Genève – Dr Romano

<meta name="description" content="Découvrez si le laser fait vraiment vieillir la peau ou s’il stimule le collagène et le rajeunissement cutané.
