Through this mechanism, the skin releases excess heat as sweat, mainly in response to exercise, higher ambient temperature or strong emotion. Although indispensable, it can become troublesome when excessive, awkwardly localised or associated with unpleasant odours.
Many patients seeking comfort without harming their health therefore look for natural alternatives to conventional antiperspirants, particularly aluminium-salt products. The most frequent consultation question is simple : is there a genuinely effective natural antiperspirant ? If so, which should be chosen safely ?
Answering requires distinguishing the terms, understanding sweating mechanisms and objectively examining available natural options.

Book an appointment

    Contents

Antiperspirant or deodorant : what is the difference ?

Before discussing natural options, a frequently misunderstood point needs clarification. Deodorant masks or neutralises body odours, generally through antibacterial ingredients (such as essential oils or alcohol) and fragrance. It does not block sweat production but acts on bacteria that break down sweat and create unpleasant odours.
Antiperspirants act directly on sweat secretion. Conventional formulas contain aluminium salts (aluminium chlorohydrate or chloride), temporarily blocking sweat-gland pores. This mechanism is effective but controversial — mainly because of skin tolerance or toxicological concerns, although these have not been formally proven.
Many patients therefore seek natural alternatives hoping for comparable antiperspirant effects. Reality is more nuanced : no 100 % natural solution currently has proven antiperspirant effectiveness equivalent to conventional formulas. However, some plant- or mineral-derived substances reduce sweating, improve comfort and gently neutralise odours over time.

Sweating and natural approaches : what are the limits and benefits ?

The search for a natural antiperspirant often reflects a broader approach : respecting skin, reducing chemical exposure, ecological choices or managing sweating without eliminating it completely.
Sweating itself is not a problem. It is a vital defence mechanism. Completely blocking it without a medical indication is not necessarily appropriate — except in established hyperhidrosis. For most people, the aim is to regulate sweating, maintain freshness and reduce discomfort from moisture or odours.
Natural antiperspirants do not eliminate sweat but may reduce moisture through absorbent powders (corn starch, bicarbonate, white clay); neutralise odour-causing bacteria with gentle antibacterial agents (essential oils, alum stone, zinc ricinoleate); soothe skin with plant extracts (chamomile, aloe vera, calendula).
In this context, best is relative : the aim is a well-tolerated natural formula suited to the patient's physiology, lifestyle and expectations rather than a miracle product.

Alum stone and sweating

Among frequently discussed natural options, alum stone has a particular place. Used since antiquity, it is a crystal of potassium aluminium sulphate. Naturally astringent and mildly antiseptic, it forms a thin film when moistened and applied to the skin, tightening pores and limiting bacterial growth.
Although it contains aluminium, this is a stable, insoluble form, explaining its reputation as gentler than conventional chlorohydrate antiperspirants. Natural alum stone (from rock) differs from synthetic stones made from reconstituted aluminium.
In practice, alum stone is well tolerated, non-irritating and moderately but genuinely reduces sweating, especially in the armpits. It does not radically block sweating but offers an alternative for sensitive skin or patients wishing to avoid conventional formulas.

Bicarbonate, essential oils, plant powders and sweating

Many natural formulas combine ingredients with complementary properties. Sodium bicarbonate, for example, is widely used for its absorbent, antibacterial effect. It is highly effective against odours but may irritate sensitive skin at high doses or with frequent use.
Essential oils (palmarosa, tea tree, lavender, sage) have recognised antimicrobial action. They reduce sweat breakdown and odours. However, precautions are needed : some are photosensitising or allergenic and unsuitable for all skin types or situations (pregnancy, children, etc.).
Clays (kaolin, bentonite) and absorbent plant powders (corn starch) regulate moisture by absorbing excess sweat. They do not act directly on sweat glands but improve comfort, reduce dampness and protect clothing.
Well-formulated products can meet the needs of people with moderate sweating. However, for hyperhidrosis, they remain insufficient as ongoing treatment.

When should you consult a doctor about sweating ?

If sweating becomes excessive, persistent, awkwardly localised (armpits, hands, feet, face) or causes significant social or professional difficulties, medical advice is essential.
A doctor can establish an accurate diagnosis, exclude secondary causes (endocrine disorders, medication) and offer appropriate care.

Diet in the natural management of sweating

The search for a natural antiperspirant should extend beyond what is applied to skin. Sweating reflects overall physiological balance, and certain dietary choices can directly or indirectly influence sweat production and body odour.
Several food groups stimulate the sympathetic nervous system and increase sweating. These include caffeine (coffee, black tea, energy drinks), alcohol, which dilates blood vessels and accelerates heat production, strong spices (chilli, ginger, black pepper), which may activate skin heat receptors, and sulphur-rich foods (garlic, onion, cabbage), which may alter sweat odour without increasing volume.
These substances are not inherently harmful but may increase sweating in predisposed or sensitive people. Conversely, fresh plant foods, antioxidants and good hydration (water, unsweetened herbal teas, water-rich produce such as cucumber or watermelon) may moderate metabolism and limit excessive sweating.
Certain plants are also reputed to regulate sweating. Common sage, for example, is traditionally used to reduce excessive sweating, particularly during menopause. Its active ingredients are thought to act on sweat glands by modulating the autonomic nervous system. It may be taken as tea, capsules or liquid extract after medical advice.
Finally, excess weight, regularly eating very fatty or sugary meals or nutritional deficiencies (particularly magnesium and zinc) can contribute to sweating imbalance. A balanced, moderate, varied diet is therefore a valuable complementary approach to natural sweat regulation.

Should aluminium really be avoided in antiperspirants ?

Aluminium salts in conventional antiperspirants (aluminium chlorohydrate or chloride) have a recognised action : they temporarily block sweat ducts and reduce sweat flow. Their effectiveness is indisputable. However, studies over several years have proposed links between aluminium and breast cancer or neurodegenerative diseases, particularly Alzheimer's disease.
To date, no strong scientific evidence confirms a direct link between topical underarm aluminium-salt use and serious disease. Health agencies consider cosmetic aluminium safe within certain concentration limits and without skin lesions. However, they recommend caution with very frequent use on shaved, irritated or fragile skin.
Faced with these uncertainties, many people choose aluminium-free alternatives or natural alum (such as alum stone), whose molecular structure differs from synthetic aluminium salts. Natural alum stone does contain aluminium, but in a stable, insoluble form poorly absorbed by skin. This makes it reassuring for those seeking a balance between moderate effectiveness and safety.
Unfounded fear and blanket demonisation of all aluminium-containing compounds should therefore be avoided. Antiperspirant choice should rely on nuanced assessment of sweating severity, skin tolerance, personal medical circumstances and individual preferences.

Article written by Dr Romano Valeria

LinkedIn

dr.romano.valeria@gmail.com

+41 78 209 02 89

["post-28056","infographie","type-infographie","status-publish","hentry

Les anti-transpirants naturels les plus efficaces - Dr Romano

<meta name="description" content="Les anti-transpirants naturels à base de bicarbonate de soude, de pierre d’alun ou d’huiles essentielles régulent la transpiration légère.
