Aesthetic medicine offers non-surgical treatments performed during consultations without general anaesthesia or incisions. It acts on the surface or at a relative depth (skin, superficial muscles and connective tissues) using techniques such as botulinum toxin or hyaluronic acid injections, mesotherapy, chemical peels, radiofrequency or lasers.

Aesthetic goals

The other major distinction concerns the ambition and intensity of aesthetic intervention. Facial cosmetic surgery is often chosen to correct excess skin, reposition significantly sagging structures, reshape a nose, tighten markedly sagging facial contours or remove eyelid bags. It is indicated when aesthetic medical procedures are no longer sufficient : when tissue ptosis is pronounced, volume has shifted or ageing is too advanced to be simply modulated.
Aesthetic medical procedures provide prevention or support. Often performed earlier in the ageing process, they soften features, smooth wrinkles, restore volume or optimise skin quality without altering facial movement or disrupting balance. They are ideal for preserving natural harmony, delaying surgery or prolonging the effects of previous surgery.

Timing and duration of effects

One essential distinction concerns how long results last.
Aesthetic medical procedures produce temporary, reversible and repeatable effects. Botulinum toxin lasts an average of four to six months. Hyaluronic acid injection results persist for ten to fifteen months depending on the product used. Peels gradually improve skin quality over successive sessions. This approach relies on regular maintenance : gentle, minimally disruptive procedures repeated over time to preserve facial harmony.
Facial cosmetic surgery, by contrast, seeks longer-lasting, sometimes permanent results. However, it involves recovery and natural tissue changes over the years. A face and neck lift, for example, provides visible rejuvenation for ten to fifteen years, at the cost of recovery time and discreet scars. Surgery therefore addresses a more structural need when medical treatments no longer adequately correct certain signs of ageing or anatomical imbalances.

Reversibility of the result

An often overlooked but fundamental aspect is treatment reversibility. In aesthetic medicine, the products used are absorbable and the effects temporary.
Excessive tightness associated with botulinum toxin subsides naturally within a few weeks. This ability to adjust, correct or let time take its course is one factor explaining the growing success of facial aesthetic medicine.
Cosmetic surgical procedures, however, are irreversible once performed. Correcting dissatisfaction after surgery is possible, but requires another procedure, additional costs and significant psychological and technical constraints. A surgical indication must therefore always be established cautiously, following a rigorous assessment of the patient's motivation and when no less invasive alternative exists.

Patient profiles : different expectations

Patients choosing aesthetic medicine often seek regular, gradual maintenance without abrupt transformation. This may involve softening expression lines, subtly plumping the lips, restoring midface support or improving skin quality. They are active, socially engaged people who do not necessarily want to look younger, but to reflect their inner energy, balance and vitality.
Conversely, patients seeking facial cosmetic surgery often express deep dissatisfaction with a structural aspect of their appearance : a nose considered too prominent, drooping eyelids that close the eyes or a jowl that alters facial contours. Their request is generally longstanding, more stable over time and involves accepting surgical constraints. The desired benefit is also different : often a more noticeable, visible change that they consciously embrace.

Synergy between aesthetic medicine and cosmetic surgery

Far from opposing one another, facial aesthetic medicine and cosmetic surgery increasingly enrich each other. Many cosmetic surgeons also perform medical procedures before surgery to optimise subsequent results. Conversely, an experienced doctor will refer a patient to a surgeon when the limits of medical correction are reached.
This complementarity rests on shared ethics : choosing for each face the most appropriate, safest technique consistent with age, expectations and anatomical characteristics. The mistake would be to treat everything medically or operate on everything. A good doctor knows when to say no, postpone a procedure, propose an alternative or develop a treatment plan that evolves over time.

Legal framework and required expertise

Professionally, aesthetic medicine and cosmetic surgery fall under distinct regulatory frameworks, although both begin with medical training.
Facial cosmetic surgery is reserved for surgeons qualified in plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery, holding a state-recognised qualification and trained to work in an operating theatre.
Aesthetic medicine is practised by doctors who have completed specific training validated by a university qualification or recognised certification. It is limited to non-surgical medical procedures performed in a safe clinical setting.
Understanding this distinction helps patients choose according to their needs. Marked lower-face laxity requires surgical management, while milder correction can be treated effectively through aesthetic medical procedures.

Choosing between aesthetic medicine and cosmetic surgery

The choice between facial aesthetic medicine and cosmetic surgery should never be guided solely by commercial or aesthetic criteria. It requires a rigorous medical assessment, detailed understanding of facial anatomy and an in-depth discussion between patient and doctor.
In Geneva, where expectations of care quality are particularly high, transparency, ethics and a personalised patient pathway are fundamental values. The doctor or surgeon must objectively guide the patient towards the option best suited to their clinical situation and expectations.
An in-depth consultation explains the benefits, limitations and potential constraints of each option. It ensures that the procedure – medical or surgical – forms part of a realistic, measured aesthetic plan that respects the patient's physiology and personality.

Choosing between aesthetic medicine and cosmetic surgery

Both doctor and patient must understand the respective limits of aesthetic medicine and cosmetic surgery. A common mistake is believing that injections or skin treatments alone can replace surgery.
However effective, aesthetic medicine cannot correct substantial excess skin, permanently reposition facial muscle structures or treat major sagging of facial contours. Nor can it alter facial bone structure or straighten a deviated nasal septum. In these cases, only surgery provides effective, lasting correction.
Conversely, cosmetic surgery has no effect on skin quality, complexion radiance, hydration or enlarged pores. After a facelift, for example, patients can continue to benefit from medical treatments such as lasers, mesotherapy or Skinboosters to maintain their skin health.
Combining the two disciplines therefore represents today's most comprehensive approach : restructuring the face while maintaining its radiance and vitality within an overall, evolving plan.

Article written by Dr Romano Valeria

LinkedIn

dr.romano.valeria@gmail.com

+41 78 209 02 89

["post-28038","infographie","type-infographie","status-publish","hentry
