Unlike the lips or under-eye area, it contains few superficial nerve endings. This means painful stimuli are less intense there.
Furthermore, hyaluronic acid chin injections are performed deeply, generally against the periosteum (the thin membrane covering bone). This depth avoids the most sensitive areas, helping limit discomfort.

Hyaluronic acid with lidocaine : more comfortable chin injections

Most hyaluronic acids used in medical practices contain an integrated local anaesthetic : lidocaine. Widely used in dental anaesthesia, this component acts within seconds of injection beginning.
With this formulation, injection becomes virtually painless as the anaesthetic spreads, making the whole session very comfortable.
In some cases, particularly for very sensitive or anxious patients, a local anaesthetic cream can be added around 20 to 30 minutes before treatment. In the vast majority of situations, however, this precaution is unnecessary.

Cannula or needle : how does this affect sensation ?

Two techniques can be used to inject hyaluronic acid into the chin :

The needle : fine and short, it allows highly targeted injection, with a brief pinprick sensation followed by slight pressure.

The cannula : a flexible, rounded-tip instrument designed to slide through tissues without cutting them. It requires only an initial puncture with a fine needle to create an entry point. This technique offers several advantages : it significantly reduces injection pain, limits bruising and reduces inflammation risk while allowing more uniform hyaluronic acid distribution.

Some doctors often favour a cannula for this area because it distributes the product evenly while providing a virtually painless patient experience.

Hyaluronic acid chin injections : what do patients actually feel ?

The most frequently described sensation is not pain but gentle pressure or slight stretching within the tissues.
Every effort is made to minimise discomfort through gentle technique, precise movements and continuous communication throughout the procedure.

After injection : pain or discomfort following treatment ?

After treatment, tenderness to touch or slight tightness in the treated area is not unusual, particularly during jaw movements (chewing or speaking).
This discomfort after injection is moderate and temporary, lasting an average of 24 to 48 hours. It is often linked to slight local inflammation, a normal tissue response to the injected product.
Symptoms resolve spontaneously and, in most cases, require no pain relief.
If more substantial discomfort develops (prolonged hardness, throbbing pain or abnormal redness), a follow-up consultation checks for an adverse event.

Chin injections : do all patients feel the same thing ?

Pain perception is individual, influenced by each patient's tolerance threshold, previous aesthetic procedures, stress or anticipation before the session and the techniques used by the doctor.
Discussing this with your doctor before treatment is therefore essential to adjust comfort measures. A tailored approach within a quality medical setting adapts the protocol to each patient.

The most common fears about pain in aesthetic medicine

Even before a diagnosis or treatment indication is established, many patients express a specific concern : fear of pain. This is natural, particularly among people who have never undergone aesthetic medical treatment.
For chin injections, apprehension often stems from anecdotal stories shared on social media, frequently without context; confusion between different facial areas (lips versus chin, for example); memories of painful medical injections (dental injections, vaccinations, etc.); limited knowledge of today's equipment (needle versus cannula, integrated lidocaine, etc.).
It is essential to understand that pain perception decreases considerably when consulting an experienced doctor who performs a controlled, well-explained medical procedure. An attentive doctor, calm atmosphere and personalised protocol often quickly ease this fear.
Most patients actually finish the session with a simple observation : “I expected worse. It was very manageable, even painless.”

Which patients experience more discomfort during chin injections ?

Although chin injections are generally very well tolerated, sensitivity may be slightly greater in certain patients.
Several factors influence how an injection feels :

Thin skin : a very thin dermis may react more to the needle or cannula passing through. However, this sensitivity remains moderate and temporary, without affecting overall treatment tolerability.

Local muscle tension : a tense mentalis muscle (a permanently tight chin or strained expression) can cause mechanical discomfort as the needle passes.

A low pain threshold or skin hypersensitivity : some people experience even gentle procedures more intensely.

Anxiety : negative anticipation or marked apprehension amplifies sensations, even when the procedure is performed perfectly.

An experienced doctor considers these factors from consultation onwards. They may offer local anaesthesia, adjust injection speed and maintain constant communication throughout to reassure the patient and adapt technique in real time.
This tailored approach ensures a comfortable, calm session, even for the most sensitive patients.

Pain, discomfort or simple pressure : sensations during chin injections

It is not uncommon for a patient to spontaneously use the word “pain” to describe a sensation that, in reality, is more of a mechanical discomfort or transient pressure. Being able to distinguish these feelings not only helps better prepare the patient but also demystifies the experience of a chin injection.
Pain, in the strict sense, corresponds to a sharp, stinging sensation that persists or intensifies. In the context of chin injections, it is very rare. If it occurs, it happens only at the moment of the initial prick, which some patients do not even feel.
Discomfort, on the other hand, is expressed as a feeling of tension or unease, without real pain. It is common during the passage of the cannula or when the gel is deposited into the tissues. This sensation is perfectly normal and temporary.
Finally, pressure is probably the most commonly reported sensation. It is the feeling of stretching or internal pushing, often felt when the injection is deeper, especially in contact with the periosteum (the bone). This pressure is not painful, but noticeable.
The majority of patients describe the procedure as painless but perceptible, evoking sensations of dull pressure, internal rubbing, or slight tension. These sensations are temporary and disappear within a few minutes after the procedure.
Ultimately, the word “pain” is often exaggerated : it only concerns the very first prick, and only in the most sensitive patients. For the vast majority, chin injection is a brief, transient discomfort, much less pronounced than they had imagined.

Will you feel hyaluronic acid under the skin after chin injections ?

This is one of the most frequent questions among patients considering injections. Concern about persistent discomfort is legitimate, but it does not reflect clinical reality.
A sensation exists, but it is brief, subtle and very different from what one might imagine. During injection, gradual filling may be perceived, comparable to moderate pressure, never pain. Slight tightness may persist in the following hours : it simply reflects natural tissue elasticity and the gel's adaptation phase.
During the first few days, some patients notice a slight raised area or unusual firmness to touch. This is temporary, linked to the product's presence before full tissue integration.
Contrary to a common belief, hyaluronic acid does not “circulate” beneath the skin. Correctly injected, it stays fully in place without migration. Everyday movements — speaking, smiling and chewing — remain entirely natural.
After around ten days, the product is fully integrated. Patients no longer perceive any difference : hyaluronic acid then behaves as a natural extension of the tissue, restoring chin structure and projection without any foreign-body sensation.

Summary : hyaluronic acid chin injections and pain

This is a very frequent question, particularly among patients discovering aesthetic medicine and wondering about sensations after injection.
The answer is nuanced : yes, something may be felt, but it remains very slight, temporary and unlike what might be imagined.
During injection, a gradual filling sensation can sometimes be felt, particularly when treatment is performed slowly using dense hyaluronic acid. This is closer to moderate pressure than actual pain. Slight chin tightness may persist during the following hour while tissues adapt and the gel begins stabilising.
Some patients notice a subtly raised contour or slightly firmer density to touch over the following days. This simply corresponds to the gel's presence before complete tissue integration.
However, no movement sensation occurs when injection is performed correctly. The product does not move beneath the skin, and there is no tingling, warmth or discomfort with everyday movements. Chewing, speaking and facial expressions remain entirely natural.
Once the gel is fully integrated — generally between 7 and 10 days after the session — patients feel nothing, either at rest or during expressions. Hyaluronic acid then behaves as a true tissue extension, providing chin support and projection without any foreign-body sensation.

Article written by Dr Romano Valeria

LinkedIn

dr.romano.valeria@gmail.com

+41 78 209 02 89

["post-27190","infographie","type-infographie","status-publish","hentry

Les injections d’acide hyaluronique dans le menton sont-elles douloureuses ?
