However, certain body areas, more exposed to external stressors or specific mechanical demands, are more prone to early wrinkle formation.

Wrinkles never appear by chance. Certain body areas, more heavily used or naturally more delicate, are particularly vulnerable. Identifying the regions most exposed to skin ageing helps explain the mechanisms involved and select the most appropriate care to soften its effects.

The neck : neck skin is particularly thin, has few sebaceous glands and is highly mobile. It is therefore vulnerable to laxity and early horizontal wrinkles, often called “Venus necklace lines”. Technologies such as radiofrequency, hyaluronic acid injections and ablative lasers are often used to correct this area.

The décolletage : frequently exposed to the sun, the décolletage experiences accelerated ageing, particularly in women. Wrinkles are mainly vertical, caused by side sleeping and tissue laxity. Photoageing also produces loss of elasticity, pigmentation marks (lentigines) and a crepey appearance.

The hands : hands age quickly through constant UV exposure, chemical stressors and frequent washing. The skin becomes thin, dry and pigmented, revealing veins and tendons. Wrinkles on the backs of the hands are accentuated by gradual loss of subcutaneous fat. Treatment uses peels, fractional lasers, hyaluronic acid injections and mesotherapy.

The arms : skin laxity on the arms, particularly the inner aspect, creates a crepey, folded appearance that often troubles female patients from their fifties. Muscle loss, fat loss and thin skin in this area accentuate the process. Superficial wrinkles may appear alongside overall sagging. Treatments such as fractional radiofrequency and peels may be indicated.

The knees : less often discussed, the knees are an area where skin folds with age because of reduced elasticity and gravity. This is particularly visible after significant weight loss. Wrinkles here are difficult to treat, but options exist : Skinboosters, mesotherapy and collagen stimulators.

The abdomen : in some women, abdominal skin becomes thin, wrinkled and loose after several pregnancies or significant weight loss. These wrinkles often accompany stretch marks and overall laxity. Although surgery (abdominoplasty) is sometimes indicated, non-invasive solutions such as fractional ablative laser are available.

Beyond chronological ageing, other factors can accelerate wrinkle formation on the body :

Prolonged sun exposure : UV radiation weakens dermal structure (photoageing).

Smoking and pollution : responsible for intense oxidative stress in the skin.

Insufficient hydration : dehydrated skin marks more easily.

Lack of physical activity : reduces blood supply and tissue oxygenation.

Rapid weight loss : causes skin laxity and folding.

Genetic predisposition : some skin is naturally thinner or less elastic.

What are the best treatments for body wrinkles ?

Body wrinkles are treated using non-invasive aesthetic medical techniques. In Geneva, several techniques are used together.
Radiofrequency (monopolar, multipolar) : this technique uses heat to stimulate collagen production. It improves firmness and softens fine lines. It is widely used for the arms, neck, abdomen and knees.
Tissue stimulators (Sculptra) : these products stimulate connective tissue. They are used deeply to restore dermal density in areas such as the arms or knees.
Body peels : acid peels (glycolic, trichloroacetic) smooth the skin surface, improve skin quality and soften fine lines, particularly on the décolletage and hands.

How can body wrinkles be prevented ?

Prevention remains the best treatment. It is recommended to :

Apply sun protection to all exposed areas (hands, décolletage, arms).

Moisturise the skin daily with appropriate skincare.

Eat a diet rich in antioxidants and essential fatty acids.

Maintain regular physical activity to support skin elasticity.

Use gentle aesthetic treatments early to stimulate tissues before wrinkles become visible.

How can body wrinkles be treated without surgery ?

For decades, anti-ageing care focused almost exclusively on the face, considered a reflection of social and emotional identity. Only over the past twenty years has aesthetic medicine broadened its horizons, embracing a more comprehensive view of ageing and affirming the need for harmony across the body. Non-invasive and minimally invasive technologies have opened new treatment possibilities beyond the face. Protocols once reserved for the most visible areas have been redesigned and refined to suit body skin, which is often more delicate, less vascularised and subject to specific biomechanical demands. This shift towards integrated body aesthetics meets two requirements : natural results that are also coherent and lasting, while prioritising a discreet, effective and preventive approach. In Geneva, where demand for highly specialised care continues to grow, this development responds to a strong expectation : harmonious, elegant and consistent rejuvenation, avoiding discordance between the face and the rest of the body. Today, care limited to a single area appears insufficient for a truly comprehensive aesthetic journey.

Does sleeping on your side encourage body wrinkles ?

Certain positions, particularly sleeping on the side or stomach, expose the skin to repeated pressure. These small compressions encourage persistent folds, particularly on the décolletage, arms, side of the face and knees. Over the years, these folds become permanent wrinkles, especially if the skin already lacks collagen or elasticity.
The fabrics used also play a role. Ordinary cotton pillowcases and sheets create friction that damages the skin barrier, particularly in thin-skinned areas such as the décolletage or face. Soft fabrics such as silk or satin limit this friction and protect skin integrity.
Sleeping on the back is recommended to reduce tissue compression. Anatomical pillows that limit neck and shoulder rotation, together with a hypoallergenic, perfectly smooth mattress cover, help protect body skin effectively.

Does weight loss encourage wrinkles and skin laxity ?

Although the skin has some elasticity, its ability to retract is limited, particularly beyond the forties. Following significant weight loss — whether spontaneous, diet-induced, after bariatric surgery or linked to illness — excess skin cannot always adapt. This produces widespread laxity, giving the surface a folded or crepey appearance in areas such as the arms, abdomen, thighs, back and knees. Rapid weight loss accentuates this, as collagen synthesis cannot keep pace. The process frequently leads to premature skin ageing and is therefore a common reason for consultation.

Does the skin microbiome influence skin ageing ?

With age, the skin microbiota becomes unbalanced. This process, called skin dysbiosis, can be worsened by overly frequent or harsh cleansing (alkaline soaps, abrasive scrubs), occlusive or irritating cosmetics, UV exposure and environmental pollution.
Body areas particularly prone to this imbalance are the back, arms, chest and legs — especially with dry or atopic skin. This imbalance promotes dryness, impaired barrier function and low-grade chronic inflammation (inflammageing), which precedes wrinkle formation.
The latest dermocosmetic formulations now combine prebiotics, postbiotics and topical probiotics to restore a balanced, functional skin microbiome. Used alongside aesthetic treatments, they offer several benefits : soothing inflammatory reactions after procedures, stimulating natural tissue repair and gradually strengthening the skin's resistance to external stressors and ageing.

Not all skin ages in the same way. Skin type — its thickness, colour, phototype, blood supply or lipid content — plays a decisive role in how quickly wrinkles appear and where they develop.
Fair phototypes (I to III) experience faster skin ageing, marked by early fine wrinkles, particularly on the décolletage, backs of the hands and upper arms.
Conversely, darker phototypes (IV to VI) retain smooth skin for longer but more frequently develop diffuse laxity, characterised by loss of tone in the neck, knees and lower face. Dermal collagen density, largely determined by genetics, varies considerably between individuals. Some women therefore develop wrinkled arm skin from their forties, while others retain noticeable firmness until sixty. The skin pinch test, performed during a medical consultation, assesses these differences and guides the treatment strategy more precisely. Lifestyle also strongly influences the speed and distribution of skin ageing.
In physically active people, repeated movements, joint microtrauma and chronic muscle tension impose constant mechanical stress, particularly around the knees and inner arms. These pressures encourage localised laxity, accelerating superficial wrinkles and early tissue sagging.
Conversely, in sedentary women, poor blood circulation and lack of muscle tone lead to accumulated skin folds, particularly around the abdomen, while the arms gradually lose structural support, causing visible laxity.
Finally, people who work outdoors are particularly exposed to photoageing. Uncovered areas such as the décolletage and hands absorb substantial ultraviolet radiation daily. This cumulative exposure accelerates skin ageing, causes pigmentation marks and deepens wrinkles.

Hormones play a fundamental role in skin quality. Menopause in women and andropause in men cause changes affecting skin quality, elasticity and hydration throughout the body.
In women, falling oestrogen levels have direct consequences : reduced collagen synthesis (up to 30 % in the first 5 years), epidermal thinning, dry skin and loss of tone, particularly on the arms, thighs, décolletage and hands.
In men, gradually declining testosterone causes : loss of skin density, reduced dermal thickness and diffuse laxity, particularly on the chest and abdomen.

Article written by Dr Romano Valeria

LinkedIn

dr.romano.valeria@gmail.com

+41 78 209 02 89

["post-25957","infographie","type-infographie","status-publish","hentry

- Dr Romano

<meta name="description" content="Zones du corps sujettes aux rides : cou, décolleté, mains, bras.
